steps of setting up POA?

my husband is scheduled to go on deployment in a couple of days, we need to set up POA asap, but I'm having a hard time. where and how do we get POA? what types of info do we need? also I plan on moving to WA before he's scheduled to come home from depolyment (long time from now) do I need any specific POA to handle the move alone? is it a good idea to make a move with out him? any info will be very helpful thanks in advance ladies.

He needs to go to legal on base or on his ship to get you a POA. I got a few specials and a general. A general will cover most everything. I got one to accept household goods and sign off on the pack out as well. Then I got a general. If you are going to do base housing you will need a special from what I am told. I was also told I would need a special to set up the move but idk about that. I moved while my husband was deployed it really wasnt bad at all. If he cant get you a POA before he leaves he can still get you one on the ship sometimes (bigger ships at least) and mail it back to you.

Hubby and i took it to notery its called attorney in fact
We wrote it ourselves i have poa anytime he is away.
So far everyones accepted it so its fully legal to do that.
It costed us 25$

thanks to you both. Meagan, I was really concerned of not having it by time he leaves, good to know I can still eventually get it. any tips on moving with out him? I really don't know what to expect or what steps to take since this is our first deployment and first move. I'm still stuck on whether I should stay or move before he comes back.

We just went to legal on base and they had us fill out some forms and they typed it up in like 10 mintues. We have gone to legal on an AF base too. You might just call ahead if you go on base and make sure they can do it but usually the secretaries at the front are notaries. I would say depends on the situation. I went home a few months and then came here. We moved homeports from WA to VA and about 1500 other families at least would be moving at the end of deployment. So I moved early. I ended up moving way early but I didnt mind because I got to know my surroundings really well and so when he got here it was a lot easier to do stuff because I knew how to get around the city. It was one less thing to stress about. Where are you moving to?

I'm moving to Bremerton WA, thanks for the info it was very helpful :) I def want to be out there before he gets home but I have so much time to make a decisions just want to be prepared for any move I make. Thanks for the advice!

I def would say try to move out before he gets back. I know a lot of my friends waited til our ship got back and a lot of girls either paid a ton for hotels or found a place that wasnt really what they were looking for. I have a friend that lives up in Bangor I think. But if you have time even save up and make a trip out there. get a feel for the area and stuff. My husband really enjoyed having a house to come home to and not having to worry about looking when he got here. Plus it was something to keep me busy. Househunting is crazy :) but a good thing to do to pass the time.

Yes, that's exactly how I feel I want him to be comfortable coming home fr deployment and I def don't want to rush and get any place to live so planning on taking a trip out to WA and looking on ahrn and online for housing because we're not going to live on base. Im looking forward to planning the move already :)

My husband was super greatful I did it while he was gone. He has so many friends that are rushing around still dont have a place almost 3 weeks later. I have one gf that ended up getting a place she didnt want at all and doesnt feel comfortable with 100% and is paying the same amount for a townhouse I am paying for a big house. Its very comforting to have the time to get it taken care of. We didnt want to live on base either, and ahrn was an awesome website for me! :)

I'm sure he was, mines is a little skeptical about me moving alone but I explained to him why it's the best thing to do. that's really a bummer that she's stuck with something she doesn't want, I'll be very upset! I'll def message you for more advice thank you :)

Dont worry just tell him us wives are used to taking care of way more than that during deployment. lol Yeah I feel so bad for her :( you are welcome def feel free!

Desiree, he can get it on the ship. He just has to go to the legal office, fill out some paperwork, they'll get it wrote up and he signs it. Then he can send it to you and you're good to go. I'm not sure you could get it before you leave, but you should be able to get it while they're out. It took about a week and a half from the time Aaron went in the office to the time they had it wrote up (back in May/June before the big deployment rush now). They may be a little bit faster right now. :)

You can get a general, but I have one for enrolling in DEERs/getting my ID card, one for his car, one for his bank account, and one for renting an apartment/house within a specified zip code/price range so that I can rent some place in our names before he gets home. Oh, and if you're going to taking care of his taxes, you'll need a specific one for that also I was told. 

Don't stress too much if you don't need it ASAP. :)

And about the move. I'm sure it would be nice for him to have a home to come back to and not have to worry about moving once he comes home. But if you can't handle it alone, he should get two weeks leave when they get back in the spring that he'd be able to help move you with. I'll be trying to move into an apartment/house before he gets back that way we have some place of our own to come back to after homecoming (I'm moving in with another wife for the deployment).

Im so happy knowing that i can still get it. I def want to be all set up by time he gets home because its gonna be such a long deployment (as you know) I don't want him to have a lot to do once he gets back but to relax a little lol. I want to get the POA that allows me to do everything! Especially the housing situation. That's nice that your moving/living with another wife that should be a lot of support :) I def think I'll be able to make the move by myself, I just gotta see how things end up working out.
