OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

How do they determine where the sailors are stationed? I see alot of overseas activity and that scares me. My youngest sailor is stationed in Norfolk and We hope the 2nd son is close by. We live on the east coast. Thank You Veronica

My Son just left Norfolk last night for Naples, Italy for 2 years. He was an MA on waterside. Is your son in Norfolk an MA? We live in NC only about 3 hours from Norfolk so this is going to be an adjustment for us!
My understanding is they must alternate their duty assignments. So if they are stateside now their next assignment must be overseas. Their times can very. My son's is for 2 years but a lot of his buddies got sent to Bahrain and that was a 1 year assignment. Another thing my Son learned about picking orders. If there are orders for an MA that is attached to a squadron that goes out ships on deployments that is considered an overseas assignment. A couple of my Son's buddies did this.
Yes, it is hard and scary but that's when you depend on your N4M Sisters to help support you. I don't know what I would have done this past week without them. I have a few that I became close with when my Son was in boot camp and one that my Son became close with her Son in A School. These four Mom's knew exactly what to say to me to help me!! Yes, I still cried almost all the way home from Norfolk last night but at least I knew it was normal and will get better. I have already heard from my Son and he says Naples is beautiful and he already loves it! How can I be too sad when he tells me that. We want our Sons' and Daughters' to be happy!

Wow Thanks so much for the wonderful response. My 20 year old is in Norfolk for 4years his ship is drydocked! My 23 year old who is a MA just left for bootcamp Last week. He hopes to go to Norfolk.I hear alot about Bahrain lately/ Im keeping up on the latest I don'twant any surprises! Thank you for all the great information and we will talk soon. Veronica

I just joined this group because my son will start his MA training soon (finishes bootcame 8/17). However, he will be in the reserves so I don't really know much about what will happen after A school. I assume from your description that your son is active duty. Do you know anything about deployment availability for reservists? I think at the time he enlisted, MA was not available for active duty so he chose reserves just to get that job. I also think he's kicking himself a little and wishes he'd selected active duty instead.

Hello Gretchen, My daughter graduated boot camp 8/17 as welll and was ship 03/253. She is in San Antonio now for her MA training they may know each other. However one of her best friend is MA reservist and this is his last year. Then he will re sign active. I do know he has been deployed more than any of her active friends. Im not sure if it just worked out that way or if that is how it usually happens. But it did make him want to go active after his contract was up as a reservist. Hope that helps:)

Thanks for the info...yes that is helpful. I'll ask my son if he knows your daughter. Do you happen to know how many years her friend's contract was for? Is he in the 4th of four years or 8th of eight? I'm told that reservists must wait a minimum of 2 years before requesting a switch to active duty status, but that might change as well. My son feels for now that the reserves will actually give him more flexibility concerning choice than active duty would. The bad part is not knowing for sure that you will be earning an income more than one weekend a month.

Sorry Gretchen , Im just getting back to you...Been crazy busy latley! Anyway her friend is is in his 4th year of his 4 yr contract. The only problem he may encounter is they may not have any open spots for MA active, if that is the case he will need to change his rate.

Thanks Melanie. That makes sense. My son originally picked the reserves for that reason actually. There were no spots for MA active when he signed up. Are we allowed to use our kids' first names here? I'm sure our kids know each other! He mentioned there are several girls going through the program with him. How did she do with the OC spray?

I dont think we can use any names :( She said the OC spray was pretty bad..but she did fine so how bad could have been!!LOL I will have her ask around who is a reservist and what not:)

Hi Melanie, yes he is in class 410 but is from CA. First name starts with P. Hows that for Opsec!
Talked to him the other day and he sounded a little bored. I guess they haven't really hit the books yet? He texted right after OC and said he'd rather been shot than go through that again. I should warn him to be careful what he wishes for!
