My son will be leaving from Seattle on Sept 19th and was wondering if anyone else has a son or daughter leaving the same time.  We live in Kirkland.  As the time gets closer, I am having a really hard time coping with this.

Hi Andy's Mom,

I'm not from Seattle, but my son leaves for BC on 9/19 too.  My heart is full of pride and breaking at the same time.  It's hard not to look at him without wanting to cry and hold on to him.

Our boys are about to live their dreams and I am sure you are as excited for this as I am, but it is going to leave a big gaping hole in our lives!

Hang in there and just know that you are not alone!

Oh thank goodness.  You are the first to reply and I was beginning to wonder if anyone from his BC would register.

As you, I am so proud of my son but my heart is also breaking.  I've never been away from him and he is my youngest.  It hit me last week-end and I cried the entire time.  Of course, I am not letting him know how upset I am as I don't want him worrying about me while in BC.  He is really excited to go and I know this is what he wants to do.  I talked him into three years of college but knew he was doing it for me and his heart was just not into it.

Where is your son leaving from?  Perhaps they will end up in the same division.  Thanks again for the note.

Our stories sound very much the same. My son just got his AA degree and said that he promises me that he will get his degree during his 8 year commitment...or more! I know that this is something that he has always wanted to do and he impressed me with holding out (9 months) on joining until he got the position that he wanted.

We are trying to not focus on his departure, but it's at the 2 week point and we are freaking out! I know this time is going to fly by and the anxiety is high!

We live in San Diego. My husband actually grew up in Washington State. Born in Seattle and spent his childhood in Richland, Eastern Washington. He was also in the Navy and was stationed here.

I would love to keep in touch and share in this adventure!

My son left from Seattle on September 4th.  I knew it was going to be hard but it is much harder than I thought.  I have not heard anything yet.  I am sure he is doing awesome.  He too is going to finish his school while serving.  Good luck, I hear it gets easier after the first week for them and after the 3rd for us parents.
