My boyfriend is currently in bootcamp and we are giving very serious consideration to getting married in the near future! I received a letter from him today saying that from his understandinghe has to live on base until he makes E5 (he is currently E3) so he doesnt know when we would be able to live together, but that only applies to single sailors right? If we're married we can live together on or off base right? Im just confused, I dont know how any of this works, can anyone clarify how all this works for me please? Thanks! :)

If you two get married then you can live together from what I know. Single tend to stay on base mosty of the time. I'm getting married right after bootcamp and that is how it was explained to us.
Ok thats what I thought. He was making it sound like even if we were married we cant live together until he gets E5, which made absolutely no sense to me. Lol. Hopefully we will just work things out to where we can get married asap, so we dont have to worry about not being able to live together!
Thanks for helping to clear that up! Perhaps you may know the answer to this other question as well: so chances are we probably wont get married before he finishes his A school,( although its a possibility i dont really see thiat happening) so I know that I wont be on his orders for his first duty station if that is the case. But if we decide we want to tie the knot after he gets there (im kinda wanting to finish up this school year before we get married cause otherwise I'd would have to leave school before the semester ends most likely) will we be able to just get married then and then live together, whether it be on or off base? I mean there is no real rules or anything as to when they can get married right?
They are supposed to ask permission via a special request chit, so he shouldn't just go and marry. It is more to let the Navy know, and to send him to a class or counseling to prep him for marriage, and to screen for fraudulent marriages. A school is always different than the fleet.
Yeah I remember hearing about them having to do that. But as long as he does that, paperwork and class/counceling, we can get married pretty much when we want even if its after he's already assigned to his first duty station right? Cause Im not counting on us tying the knot before A school is done.
Oh ok, thanks for the advice, he graduates 9/21 so only 12 days from now, so we've definitely got a lot to talk about! Haha, Im very excited for us to start our new life together! Hopefully we will be able to talk it over and figure out a plan that will be just right for both of us!
you should be able to live together. During school he'll have to live on base. Only people who were already in and back at school were allowed to live off base. After that, it's easier to live on base when you are of lower rank, but we've never lived on base. we own our home out in town. you do need to get married before he gets out of school or you will have to pay for your move yourself
