(Yes, it's me again. I get a lot of questions that I don't know the answers to so I post them on here!)

After PIR the recruits have to check in to A-School. Is that directly after, or do we get to spend some time with him (probably not very long if this is the case) before he has to check in.

Also, we've heard check in can take up to 5 hours! That's crazy! Has this ever happened to anyone?! He's staying in Great Lakes for schooling if that helps.

Thanks!

My husband also stayed in GL for A school.

Immediately after PIR you have about an hour with him-he'll know when he has to be back. After they take them across the street to check in to A school, and yes it can easily take 5 hours. Remember, they have to bus all the Sailors over there and check them all in and brief them all before he can leave. When he can, he will call you to be picked up. Make sure you answer that call otherwise you won't know where to go to get him! Then he'll have to be back that night, usually around 10.

Saturday and Sunday he will be able to leave fairly early, like 7 am. But he will call you each day when he is allowed to to be picked up.

Well this should be fun then. Lol.

It will be. The wait is not that bad it's not like you stick around for it. We went and got lunch then went back to the hotel and I took a nap because I couldn't sleep AT ALL the night before and we woke up at like 4 am to get there!

Oh geez! I know I won't be able to sleep the night before. I'll be too excited!

I really should have thought about them getting briefed and all. It totally slipped my mind. I should know this, I work for the government.

His parents were hoping to grab some lunch with him and I, but I guess those plans will become dinner plans!

Yeah, unfortunately you shouldn't count on him being around for lunch! We picked my husband up and went back to the hotel so he could relax for a few hours then went out for a nice steak dinner :) he'd been thinking about it all throughout boot camp and couldn't wait to have a steak! L

Oh man I bet! I'm sure that's all my boyfriend wants right now! He loves steak. Are there any good steak houses up there that you recommend?!

We went to the Outback in Gurnee (15 mins away). I've heard Steve's Restaurant had good reviews for steak as well but we've eaten at several Outbacks here in CA so we wanted to play it safe. It turned out to be a great choice! There were other new sailor's there w their fam as well.

Awesome! He loves Outback so I'm glad that's an option :)

Yeah, it's close enough that ur not wasting precious together time driving all over. And the ambiance is nice & updated. Some of the restaurants around base just looked really run down & old.

oh that sucks :( I might have to take him out for mexican food too. he's so glad they serve them tacos in bc lol

We went to Jimmy's Charhouse. Close to our hotel and base. It was really nice, and lots of new Sailors there too!
Keep in mind though, that most sailors leave for their A School Saturday morning. So even though you have to wait those extra hours for him to check in at Great Lakes, you get a lot of extra time with him compared to sailors with a schools elsewhere. My sailor was GL for A school too. It was great to see him for a few days :)
