I just saw my son swear in and leave for boot camp yesterday.  I felt bad for the ones whose families were unable to come.  They looked a little lost while the others were getting their pictures taken.  So I offered to take their pictures and e-mail them to someone for them.  They and their families were very appreciative.  It was a small group, but for a large group, you could at least take a group picture of them taking their oaths and send it.

Such a  nice thing to do.

That's very sweet that you did that for the new recruite's. I know the family appreciated it. My son leaves from the MEP center for swearing in next Tuesday 9-25-12. I will follow your trend and ask if anyone needs the same treatment. I'm honored to be able to attend. I do have a question. How long did it take for the swearing in process? My son told me I could get there by 9am. Not sure what time they will call him. Just curious really confused on the whole process.

Tjmax, we arrived at 8 am (recruiter originally told us 9 then changed it to 8) We got to spend alot of time with him, there were only 3 boys swearing in and they didn't end up leaving on the bus to the airport until after 11. His flight was at 1.  They had them up at 4:30 am and off to MEPS by 6. Alot of hurry up and wait and more hurry up and wait. Advice, take some type of reading device.......KINDLE, etc.

My son had to be there at 6.  We were told to be there at 8:45.  We had to sit for a while before he came out to the waiting room.  Had plenty of time to talk.  Shippers were in and out doing processing stuff and waiting some more.  MEPS is pretty accomodating, had a tv, coffee and vending machines.  They swore in around 10:30 I think and we took pictures, they signed their contracts.  The Red Cross gave a briefing to shippers and families, then the shippers had lunch, picked up their orders and left about 11:30.

A very thoughtful gesture. Those kids will remember you forever!! These are the kind of stories and posts that I love to read. Thank you for your kindness.

I am really bummed.  My sons recruiter told him we shouldn't go.  It was a 3 hour drive and not a good place to say goodbye and it would be crowded and we really wouldn't be able to see him.  We had gotten the time off from work and everything then my son told us it wasn't a good idea.  I bet he was sad we weren't there.  He shipped from Sacramento on 9/11.

Recruiters lie!  Sorry if I offend anyone, not saying they all do, but I've dealt with them before.  I wasn't told I could go when my son's father (my husband at the time) joined, and I wasn't told when my son joined.  I heard about it somewhere else and had my son get the info.  Maybe MEPS is different out there.  I'm sorry you missed it, but I'm sure your son understood it wasn't because you didn't want to go or because you didn't support him.

Your son will understand. We have several strong groups in CA. I made a card for our new members to use if they run of our ideas for letters. Few free to join us. Click on link below and scroll back a page or two.
