Something I've been wondering about since I talked to my SR is leave...as in, he's trying to take it right after he gets out of BC. And apparently something's going on, because he was telling me that he's actively trying to get it approved, so I just have a few questions:

1. How is he doing this/is he able to do this?

2. Is it realistic to hope that he will get leave when he gets out?

3. He was talking about taking two weeks, and I've heard that there's a two week Christmas leave. Would he be using all of those days? If so, is there any way (if he is able to get leave) he's able to break it up so he can still have some time off during the holidays?

Be gentle...I hate to say that my hopes are high, but I really hope he can come visit me.

I'm not great at gentle, but here goes:  He earns 2.5 days of leave each month he serves, totalling 30 days a year.  It begins counting from MEPS when he shipped.  They can borrow a limited number of days, to be approved on a case by case basis.  Most commands do not want a sailor to go too far in the hole.

No, he isn't going to be taking leave out of boot camp.  He may think he is, but he is not.  No one does, with one exception: the divisions graduating on the day the holiday stand down.  Those new sailors graduate and pretty much borrow the ten days or so needed to make up the holiday period.   That often means no leave after A school.

RTC will not grant his leave request, as your sailor undoubtedly has a set of orders to an A school, with a report date pretty much set in stone.  A leave request would be processed by his new school after he checks in... and A schools routinely do not grant leave requests with the holiday exception.  (plus emergency leave, which is different and doesn't pertain to this situation, or sailors on hold)  Even if he is undesignated, he will have to report in for training at Great Lakes.  He has orders, he isn't  going on leave.

If he is going to A school, he'll need his leave days for the holiday stand down.  The number of days available to him is far from unlimited and must be budgeted carefully.

I have a somewhat related question. I am planning to fly out to my fiance during Thanksgiving while he is at A school. Does he need to take leave to even have a few hours a day to spend as he wishes?

Generally they get Thurs & Fri off for Thanksgiving. If he does have those days off he won't need to request leave. If he has duty any day that weekend he will have to work it and you won't get to see him at all that day. If he has reached a liberty phase where he can spend nights off base he will have to put in a chit to request it.
I won't say it's impossible, because there are always situations that are going to be different than the norm, but I am sorry to tell you that it's very unlikely that he will get leave right after boot camp. Last year when our son had his pir, it was in Dec. They still made all the Sailors report to their A schools then the schools allowed Christmas leave. How long Christmas leave is really depends on the school and when they start back up with the holidays. But it will very rarely include both Christmas and New Years - this isn't just an A or C school thing, it's how the Navy does holiday routines, as a way to ensure that they have enough people to cover duty sections and stuff, and still let as many people as possible get time off over the holidays.

I'm very sorry, I know that you were really wanting a different answer than this! (Keep in mind, once he gets to his school and has phased up, you can go visit him!)

I love that we were all answering at the same time!

:-) Me too - great minds think alike!

I didn't even want to start with PCS orders, travel days and leave between commands; that's for later and not for sailors in training.  Sounds like her soon-to-be-sailor knows just enough about leave to think he can take it (family member in one of the branches which DO get to take leave after basic perhaps) but not enough about the Navy training pipeline to realize it doesn't work that way coming out of Great Lakes.

Anti M, exactly - there's so many factors that come into play - especially right out of boot camp and a school that have to be considered, taking leave then isn't quite that easy... And a lot has changed - I remember that we did get to take leave right out of bootcamp, but it did cause a lot of issues for the Navy doing it that way, and they stopped allowing that yrs ago.

Agree with everyone else. I know my husband was told he would get to come home for 2 weeks after BC while he was waiting to start A school so I am sure a lot of guys are told that :( sorry hun.

Did someone die and he is going home to a funeral?  Is a immediately family member (parents, brother, sister, wife, child) life in danger?  If the answer to those two questions are no, than he isn't getting leave after bootcamp.

Even if something is wrong with you and you are not married, they will not allow him leave after bootcamp to go see you.

He will be going to "A" school.  If the school is in Great Lakes, he will move over the same day.  If his school is out of state, he will fly out the day after PIR.

If he is in bootcamp, he isn't activity doing anything expect what he is told to do.

Regarding Christmas leave, if he is in "A" School, they will tell him what days he can take for leave when he gets there.

Sorry you should learn not to get your hopes up when it comes to the military.

Once they are in A school, any idea of how soon they know what days they have Thanksgiving and Christmas off (IF they are given breaks on those holidays)?

Thanksgiving, they get the holiday off if they don't have duty.  Friday is probably holiday routine.  They cannot go outside their 300 mile liberty radius without taking leave.  Since they're so close to Christmas, it isn't a good idea to burn leave days.

Christmas is roughly ten days~two weeks.  There are dates floating around, but none have been confirmed by the school commands.  Could be any day now... or not.  It's the Navy.  A tip: no one will be getting on an early morning flight, it takes hours to check them all out on leave.  Get them back a day early, winter travel to Chicago is iffy.
