I'm shopping for a dress to wear to my first Navy Ball, and I'm having a hard time. My first thought was to find a dress that covers all of my tattoos. I'm a tattoo collector, so I have artwork that I've spent thousands of dollars on, covering my back, shoulders, and upper arms. So my only dress options with full coverage are 3/4 length or long sleeves, with the back covered as well. When I showed my love the dresses I had in mind, he thought that they looked matronly, and boring. He says that I shouldn't worry about covering the tattoos. I like that option better, but I don't want to look completely out of place! I know that tattoos are a dime a dozen these days, but I would hate to be "that tattooed girl" at his event. What do y'all think?

As long as none of the tatts are obscene, go for it.  You can always add a shrug if you want to cover up at the beginning of the ball, during the more solemn ceremonial part, and take it off for dancing.

I've seen many tattoos at Navy Balls. As long as your dress is still formal and not club wear or way over the top sexy / tons of skin showing then you'll be fine! I've seen women with multiple tattoos visible who looked classy and gorgeous, and I've seen women without a bit of ink showing g that looked like a pole dancer on her night off....

But the very fact that you're asking about it makes me put my money on you being in the tattooed and classy category :-)

So pick a dress that you like and that makes you feel beautiful and have a wonderful evening out with your Sailor!
Thanks for your responses! I'm feeling better about letting them show, so now I can have more fun shopping for a gown :)

There are a lot of great long sleeved dresses on renttherunway.com, not matronly at all. It's a website where you can rent designer dresses for your event at a fraction of the cost, and then just send them back. It's pretty awesome actually. Check it out! :-) There are also tons of other dresses too, if you decide you do want to show your tattoos.

I've used RTR in the past, and I love it! I wasn't crazy about any of the long sleeved dresses they had the last time I looked, but I will definitely look into some of their other styles now that I've decided to go ahead and
show my tattoos!
