Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Nothing Wrong with Undesignated Sailor!
First off ladies my heart goes out to you for supporting your love one's. It's not the end of the world to be classified undes. I should know I was way back in the 70's ha ha . I had the best times of my life in the Navy. My buddies were jealous as hell, I got orders for the West Indies paradise is what it was. Anyways I have a daughter who will be joining the Navy soon. And this old salt will recommend the undesighnted way of life to her. Its good ole fashion on the job trainning. Gives them plenty of time to know what they really want. I'am sure I'll be on here again.

Thanks David! Its these words of encouragement that will get me thru. My son leaves 8/12 for BC and is going in undesignated, simply because there where not any other jobs available for him and wanted to get his career started. He has a 69 on his ASVAB, so we are hoping for some great opportunities to open for him!

I can say that my son went in last Aug as undesignated , he PIR on in October. This Jan he was on the Admiral of the 7th fleet ship the USS Blue Ridge and is stationed out of Yokosuka Japan
he went to Saporro Japan for the famous Ice festival, he spent Chinese new year in the largest chinatown in the world, he has been on the world 3rd largest ferris wheel, euro disney, toyko, drank habu sake ----
He just went on his first cruise
he has now been to 2 Korea ports
Hong Kong China
malysia
indonesia
Thialand (for the worlds largest water fight)
Russia (to march in a parade to commemorate WWII allied forces)
and indeed he is undesigated, yep that paint scraper (which he doesnt do anymore then anyone else)
best choice my son ever made was UD ---- --- Oh my how I worried thinking all bad things.
BUT I came to this room and the moms explained stories and I listened to the words the kiddos said ---HOLY SMOKES I almost told my son run run run to the recruiters office and take Undesignated.
The stories in the room range and vary ---but oh la la they are all great , all these kids are doing amazing interesting things
Let me tell you I would in a blink of an eye change place with my UD son ---- without question.
And he has been in (including Boot camp time) 9 months ------ UD all the way baby !!! -

What an awesome story Mollymom, and one that will no doubt stay in my thoughts as my sons begins his adventure. The sense of relief that you have given me is so appreciated. While I wish that letting him go was as easy as coming to terms with the "UD" plan, I have faith that this is an incredible journey for us both!

Okay so you basically telling us the Undesignated is better choices? My daugther is in BC right now and her PIR will be August 24th> I see all the paperworks that went back to me it says there she is Undesignated. So this is good like you said. This means I need not to worry about it correct? I know she wants to travel around Asia and Europe hopefully she can go to Japan. I will go see her there. Love Japan that's for sure. I lived there for good 3 years. I cried when we go back to the States. I have two cousins that still in Japan and they have dual citizenship.

Thanks my son PIR is 11/21/14. Then he goes to A school in PCOLA. I'm just worried he won't like the jobs he is assigned. I want hom to enjoy the experience.

Thank you! My son is PACT Seaman. He is going to Japan soon! We are very excited for him and I appreciate your story because he has joked about being a paint chipper... lol! He is the first in our family to join the military, so all of this is new to us. N4M has been a lifesaver! Love reading stories and getting info from all the other moms. Thank you for sharing your story, and congratulations on your daughter joining our brave sons and daughters. My son became undes through circumstances that he did not choose, but has dealt with the cons of the situation with poise and vigor. He loves the Navy, like his father did, and as his grandpa did. Believe me when I say there has been a lot of loud crowing about three generations being Navy men!!! I believe it helped him to learn the value of hard work, while learning a wide range of jobs. Now, he has been rated a little over a year, and just today was informed he has been promoted to BM3.....HooRah!!!!! The Navy is the best decision our son has made in his young life. He would tell you that if he was here, but he's at his first choice duty station: Hawaii (suffering in paradise!!!). Best wishes to you and your family as you begin your new Navy adventure. -

David B. Thank you so very much. We moms can tell the newer families that undesignated isn't a "bad" thing...but it means so much more when it comes from someone who has been there. My son wen kicking and screaming into undesignated when he was dropped from A school due to physical reasons.....rated as a GM just short of a year and now says the rate he'd originally chosen would have been a mistake. Talk about your worst mightmare becoming your best blessing!!!!

Do you know if you can pick up a job or pick up an A school in BC if you are undes? are they likely to be stationed certain places than others? What would the chances be of getting Florida? our son and myself live in florida and i currently have about a year left in med school and i cannot move until finished.
