My son was sent to Ship 5!!
My son called this morning and told me he was in isolation and was being discharged!! He said they told him he has a medical condition with his heart and may have pre-hypertension. Isn't that high blood pressure?? He's only 19! And wouldn't they have found that out at his 2 physicals he had in May and right before he left for BC?
I asked him if he was on ship 5 and he asked "how did you know about ship 5?" I told him I saw it on Navy for Moms. He was impressed a little bit that I kinda knew what he was talking about. But he was crying and said he was with the mentally ill people! He said he would know more when he talked to legal but I don't know when that will be! He said he could fight it but some people on ship 5 have been fighting it for almost a year and he doesn't want to stay there any longer than he has to if they are kicking him out. He said he might be able to re-inlist in 9 months but he will do Air Force if he does that.
What can I do now? He arrived at BC Oct. 3rd. He called me Tuesday and sounded so happy and upbeat and then today it was a whole different Kenny! I am so worried about him!

My heart goes out to you & your SR. My son will be coming home on Monday. I know what you mean about why they don't find this stuff at MEPS.....makes me wonder. I feel my son got a raw deal over the whole thing. It will take allot of time if they fight it, but some have won their appeals. They are alot of guys on ship 5 right now, Thursday there was 200, 24 went home yesterday & 33 are set to go home Monday & Tuesday. But there are more coming in everyday. So many dreams are gone. Make sure you tell him when he goes to legal to get a RE3, not a 4, 4's can not re-enlist in any branch. He will have his ups & downs days, there are some guys in there that a causing trouble and it will affect all of them. Keep writing him letters, keep strong & that he is loved! If you would like me to write him in box me his name & I will write & pray for him. There are some wonderful women on here that know the pain you are dealing with & we are here for you.

If he doesn't fight it he will be sent home in 10-20 days via the cheapest means to the goverment, you won't know when he is coming home until a few days before he is sent home. At that time, if he is being sent home via bus and you want him to fly you will have to provide a cc to pay for a plane ticket.
If he fights it he could be there, for an unknown amount of time, anywhere from a few months to a year.
While there, he is still a recruit and falls under the recruit rules.
No one on base can legally tell you any information, unless he signed the legal and hippa paper work. It is up to him if he wants to sign it, no one can require him to sign it.

There are 33 set to FLY home tomorrow & Tuesday, my son is one of them & I have not been advised that we will have to pay anything. I ask my son & he said no one has said anything about that. My son has been on ship 5 for 24 days. I am still waiting for the phone call with flight info.
I haven't had much luck with legal, called many times & no one will call back. But Friday they did let him call me, so that was good. My son did sign the paper work so that I could talk to them but when they wont call ya back it's not much good for anything. Stay Strong & have Faith that everything works out for the best.

I said via the cheapest means home...sometimes it is via plane other times it is via bus. You wont know until they get the are on the list and know the day they are going home

Hello Kay-lo, First off, how are you? It's been a couple days since you got the news and I know I was in shock until about day 3 and then it was just a numbing terrible feeling of disapointment and regret all rolled up in a nice blanket of misunderstanding and anger. That is normal, and it takes a long time for it to go away. They spend so much time preparing and working toward this goal to be pulled so quickly from it for a medical condition you were never even aware exisited just plain sucks! My son has been on ship 5 for 2 weeks, same issue, he got hurt and then diagnosed with migraine clusters. They run in the family, but the stress and lack of sleep triggered them and ultimatly ended his military career. Know that your not alone and you can turn to any of us for comfort until this nightmare ends.
Here is what I know from the letters and phone calls I've gotten since my son was moved to SEPS. It's way overcrowded, so there are very few privledges. They can't watch TV, they haven't been going outside, although the PO's got in trouble for that last week, so that could have changed. They can read and write letters. Although he will not get your letters till he's been there about 8 days because that's how bad the mail system is. He can call home about once a week, so keep your cell phone on you at all times. They will promise him the world, from what I have heard, none of that is true. There are a few grants available for college and if you look back on the regular feed on this page you can get more information. You can call both legal and the ship, but he can't just come to the phone and from what I gather, if you call too much they will give him a really hard time over it, so just sit tight. It doesn't need to be any harder on him than it already is. It's going to get bad, where they are is not summer camp and mentally it gets to them. Again, hang in there. Write him a lot of letters, use the following address:

My son met with his first recruiter in October 2011. Almost a full year of walking the straight and narrow. Not associating with friends who drank or attended local parites. He worked to lose 35 pounds so he would be in perfect physical condition for the PT. He studied and took the ASVAB 4 times (that's an entirely different story which includes him studying his ass off to take it a second time to improve his score and then they accused him of cheating on the test, like that's even possible. So he had to take it a third time and the computer system crashed and lost the score. Had to go back and do it again, no one takes the ASVAB 4 times in 3 months) Then he had the score he wanted and had high hopes of getting into the sonar program and they tricked him into going in Undesignated under the premise that he could be a "Sonar Apprentice". Turns out that was B.S. Now all this with the migraines and broken elbows, we are done, we are so done it's not even funny. God was trying to tell us something for a year. We should have listened.

Terri, I hold on to the hope that my son is making friends with guys like your son and they are helping eachother get through it. I heard from my son yesterday via instant message on Facebook. They could not call home yesterday because another group came in at the same time as they had privledges. So he jumped on the computer and talked to me for a bit that way. He won't get into detail, but he says its bad, really bad and he needs to get the hell out of there. He also said that he's got more than a few "normal" friends and they try to stick together. I told him to be sure to get names and contact info so that he could stay in touch with these guys. I hope to see your son's information on that list. I am hoping he sees legal today or tomorrow and we will be getting our walking papers by the end of the week. We are lucky, we don't need to wait on travel, I live close enough to go pick him up.

I got to talk to my son for almost 45 minutes today! I feel much better now because he sounded SO much better! What happened was when he took the swim test, he said several in his division were quitting halfway through it and he was determined he wasn't going to fail that test. He said he jumped from the tower, swam his hardest to the other end and when he climbed out, he was dizzy and his chest was hurting and the next thing he knew, they were loading him on a stretcher into an ambulance and taking him to ER. He said they ran some tests and said he was fit for duty and sent him back to BC. His chiefs (he said their training commanders aren't petty officers like some of the other divisions, they have 2 chiefs) sent him to medical where they did more tests and determined that he had something in his bloodstream that is only there if you have heart tissue damage as in a heart attack. So they sent him to ship 5. He said there are a lot of mental guys in there and it's a lot like Lord of the Flies at some times but he's gotten to stand watch and get away from the madness. He also said his bunkmate was wanting to be a Navy Seal but got hurt or something so he's out. He said there are a few other Seal recruits that he hangs out with and tries to stay away from the nuts. He said he wants to wait until he's 21 and reinlist with the Air Force so he doesn't have to mess with a swimming test. He never was very interested in swimming anyway. We live within 10 miles of a wonderful lake that EVERYONE goes to in the summer and he has no interest in it. He said he would bounce back from this and sounded very upbeat under the circumstances. I just hate that we all were so excited about him being in the navy and bam, one thing goes wrong and they want nothing to do with you!
I am so thankful for this website because without it, I would have been totally lost! Thank you all for your kind words and prayers! Keep Kenny in your prayers...I say a prayer for all of the SRs and a prayer of thanks for all of you moms that are on here!

I love you ladies, what would we do without one another??? I have good news & bad news. Benji has been at O'Hare airport all day. First flight was cancelled due to bad weather, 2nd flight was delayed & then they bumped him off the flight. He just called & he is on the 9:10 pm flight. He has a boarding pass in hand, thank the Lord!!! My son will be home soon!!!! Doing happy dance!
I am so in agreement with you on the things they are nit picking about these guys. So unfair! Please inbox me your SR's names & I would love to write to them, it's very important that they know they are not alone and someone is thinking & caring about them. I can't wait to find out all the details about ship 5. I am going to give him a couple days before I say anything but he may just dish the dirt right off. I am going to stay on here to give as much support as I can. Stay strong!!!

Okay, it's been a week since my son has called. When he called last Monday, he said they were letting them call every day. I've kept my phone on me 24/7 and he hasn't called since! I called ship 5 and spoke with the chief on the quarterdeck and told him I was worried and should have heard from him and he said he would get a message for him to call me. So far, nothing!
Has anyone else gotten to speak to their SR??

Honey my son has been there since the begining of October and I've heard from him twice. Typically once a week is when they can call, but if a recruit group comes in when they have phone privledges, they have to relinquish the phone bank to the recruits. It is what it is. He's fine, he'll call soon. Hang in there. But don't keep calling, you will only make matters worse for him. He's safe. At this point all you can do is wait. We're all in the same ship (no pun intended).
