Good Morning Captain Lintner!  My son left yesterday for GL bootcamp.  His proposed date is 12/21 for graduation.  Since I have heard that we would (as a family) hang out after graduation, in this case shall I make plane arrangements instead to leave to come back home for Christmas?  They moved up his departure date due to him finalizing his bootcamp during the week of Christmas.  Sugggestions?  Thank you for your time!

Recommend you wait until you get the information about when his PIR will be before you make any plans.  Things change all the time with the military.

Once you know his PIR date, if it is 12/21...RTC will post information on their FB page as to what that PIR groups family needs to do regarding if their recruit is taking leave.

The graduating class on the 21st will go directly on leave after graduation. The rules are a little different at RTC but I believe they will be allowed to be on leave until the 30th. They won't check in to TSC until they return from leave.

Great! Thank You Captain for responding personally. It's great to know you are monitoring and willing to answer questions.

Just trying to make sure the correct information gets out.  Our sailors can save money by booking early and they have better options for flights.

when can we expect to know about the friday after thanksgiving? also we want to travel to family in Iowa that is 4 hours/200 miles away, does he need to put in any paperwork for that?

I'd count on the Friday, I've never seen it be a workday, although it can be a duty day for a few sailors.  That's within the liberty limits of 300 miles, so no special paperwork.  But he will need to make sure he does not have a duty day that weekend.  He should know his duty rotation and can tell you if he's off or not.

Good answer.

Just wondering if you are gonna be in Great Lakes couldn't he take leave and stay with you??

Yes they can.  0600 on the 28th is when they would be allowed to leave. They do have two four day weekends over the holidays and the other three days will likely be reduced hours. May want to save the leave days.

What is the earliest they can leave on 12/21?

I too am wondering what is the earliest time they should book a flight on 12/21?
