My son just called and said he found out when stand down is.  Any suggestions from peeps in the know as far as purchasing tickets to fly home...airlines that offer military discounts...who is the best airline to fly with?  (Can't imagine flying over the holidays:/  Would love to hear from you!

Be very careful about booking airline tickets. I've already gone through the headaches so I can let you know. My son was told his leave dates so made reservations. The next day he was told the dates were incorrect so my son had to rebook (at an additional fee). Also, plan on them returning a day earlier than they need to. You never know what can go wrong with travel plans, especially when flying into Chicago. Not to mention, you can't always get travel times that align properly.

This is Captain Lintner, the CO at TSC.  I have approved the leave dates and they are 21 Dec - 6 Jan.  All students must be back in their baracks by 2200 on the 6th. Sailors do not need to wait for approved leave chits to book flights.  Unless they end up in a disiplinary status, they will be granted leave for the holidays.  All students will have the option to take the entire leave period. Those graduating from bootcamp after the 21st will be allowed to depart on leave after graduation and will still be required to be back by 6 Jan. The ITT office on base is the easiest place for your sailor to purchase tickets but you can try any airline.  We have busses going to Milwaukee, Ohare and Midway so you can choose your airline. Buy early to get the best deal.  Encourage your sailor to use the MWR buss to the airports. Its the most painless way to get there.

The Friday after Thanksgiving has not yet been declared a day off but it typically is. Your sailor should be off Thursday through Sunday for the weekend. I am happy to answer any questions you might have.

Thank you for taking the time to post personally, sir. Outstanding!

(I was in Great Lakes decades ago... the old BEQ is still standing, wow.)

Thank you so much for the information Captain. Well the Sailors still need to "barrow" days for leave or does everyone automatically get all those days free to come home? Also my husband has PIR on November 30, since that is the Friday after Thanksgiving does that mean he will also have the weekend off? He will be in Great Lakes for his A school.

I know this one, he will need to borrow those days in order to take leave.  No one gets more than 72 hours for "free"; that would be liberty, and liberty can't run for more than three days (four with special permission).  Also, they can't combine liberty and leave days in the same time period.

If he is still in bootcamp, he will not have the weekend off. That only applies to sailors already at A school or those who PIR on the 21st.

Thats correct, Sailors earn 2.5 days per month, so they have 5 days when they start A school.  Anything over that amount is called going in the hole and they will have to earn that time back.

Michelle, from my understanding all the sailors will have daytime liberty for the weekend after PIR. They have to report back every night, but they have all day Saturday & Sunday to spend with their families.

Thank you so much!

Thank you for taking the time to share this info!

Will sailors staying on base during stand down have watch and duty? I am planning to be in GL from Dec 18-27... just trying to get an idea of how much time and how many days I will actually get with my sailor...

Yes, they will.  Normal rotation is every four days, but with so many gone, it might be stepped up.  Just don't know and I'm thinking there aren't going to be many concrete answers given here.  But you can visit with him on base on his duty days, as long as he does not have a watch and makes his musters on time.

ohhhhh i see. thanks!

do you know where i'm allowed to be on base? i'm assuming the barracks are off limits. hopefully the frequency of duty days don't get stepped up too much =/
