I booked my flight to PIR a while ago, and I am leaving from O'Hare at 8:30pm Saturday. I chose to leave from O'hare because I thought that would be where my SR would depart from to go to A school. But, my co-worker recently went to Chicago and was at Midway and said he saw tons of sailors there last Saturday... so now I'm getting really nervous! Does anyone have advice or can tell me about their experience with meeting their SR at the airport before A school? He is going to San Antonio for A school. I'm going to PIR by myself and I'm not renting a car, so leaving from different airports would put a major stressor on "planning" this out. If we do leave from different airports, any suggestions on how to plan out my time better would help a lot!!

I think you are fine with O'Hare. When my bf left for MS after PIR he left Great Lakes at 2am and was at the airport at the USO with a bazillion other sailors. I went to O'Hare at 6am to meet him before his flight. He left at 11am while others left much later in the day. They all go together regardless of what time they fly out. I doubt he would leave from Midway, but if he does your flight is late enough to hang out at Midway and then get back to O'Hare. One thing you will learn about the NAVY and traveling is how to be resourceful. Don't stress about it - it will work out regardless:)

Thank you, and you are so right. I do over-think stuff and stress myself out. I'm not comfortable with changes that I haven't planned for! But now that he's going to be in the Navy, I'm going to have to learn how to roll with the punches! :p Did you leave his cell phone with him at the airport? I was planning on doing that so that we have communication when he lands in SA...

Everything will be awesome! That is one whirlwind of a weekend I will remember forever. I brought his cellphone and laptop with me and gave them to him at the airport. We have talked and txted everyday since (3/30/12 -everyday). It gets better!

Okay good! :) And that's awesome, I can't wait to get back on those terms again!

There are train stations at both airports so if he does happen to fly out of Midway you can get to O'Hare easily.

Yeah I got a late flight on purpose just in case I had to work around stuff like that. Thank you!

I thought they had an equal chance of flying out of ORD or MDW depending on what tickets the Navy was able to obtain for their destination. There's a shuttle service that does go between the two airports.

From what I have heard they have a chance of flying out of any of the local airports. Idk if thats true but I have heard of sailors leaving from more than one airport. :/ One thing I do know is that rarely is anything ever set with the military except that things are always changing and things are rarely in line with our plans. I hope things work out for you though! I would research some info on cabs so you can figure out other modes of transportation if he ends up at a different airport.

My SR was one of the Sailors going to San Antonio for A School at Midway last Saturday and yes there was alot of them.  It was an amazing experience being there.  We were able to get gate passes and go through security.  Your SR probably won't know which airport he is leaving from until a few days before PIR.

Since you will be on your own.  I suggest you contact "Sarge".  His information is here on the site somewhere.  He holds a Meet and Greet on Thursday evening that is fabulous and will give you a wealth of information.  He also has a taxi service and is an expert with the entire process.  I think he even has a special price for the families that hook up at airport.  You can also arrange a shuttle to the PIR, pick up from the airport, etc.  I think he would be your best bet with planning.  Your might be able to share the cost with other people in similar situations.

Yeah I have heard a lot about Sarge!! Haha, I'm definitely going to look into his shuttle service because everyone has recommended his services :) I think with the time I allowed myself on Saturday gives me enough time just in case we leave from different airports. Thank you for all your replies! It helps a lot :)

Our son flew out of Midway when he graduated boot camp. My husband and I were flying in and out of Milwaukee (it was much cheaper for us to fly in and out of there, and since we were traveling literally half way around the world to be there, saving money was a big deal lol). My inlaws flew in and out of OHare. If you can, book your flight for later that night or for a red eye, then, even if you don't fly in and out of the same airport, you can still spend some of that time together.

Enjoy the PIR and the time you all will have together :-)

My sailor went to san antonio for A school and he left from Midway. Originally we thought that he was going to leave from O'hare. Luckily my flight came into and departed from Midway, and my hotel was on the same street. It could be either or honestly...
