My fiance' is in BC now.  Prior to leaving, we discussed the future, and he is fully supportive of my desire to go to law school even though it means giving up a stable budding career.  I am planning to decide on which school to attend once we find out his permanent duty station.  As I understand it, he will find that out during A-School.

Does anyone here have any experience with this situation?   I have already run into small hurdles. (LSAT is scheduled the day after his graduation, but I managed around that by just changing my testing center). Based on when we find out where he will be stationed,  I may not be able to begin school in Fall 2013 as I originally planned due to application deadlines.

I want to be sure that I am being realistic about the future.  Any insight that you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Wow! Congratulations on such a big step! What will happen if you were accepted into a very good school that wasn't where he is stationed? Please don't tell me you would give it up! If he loves you, he would never want you to either. If I've learned anything from these years of being apart from my boyfriend, it's the importance of finding yourself and doing things that you love. There may be times when you may be without him for a very long time. You can't put everything on hold while waiting for orders. Congratulations, again.

Congratulations on your decision to go to law school!  A couple of points you need to consider:

  • How long will you be at a particular duty station?  If you have to wait a year to start school and you need another three years to complete law school, you should try to get stationed at a base that has lots of opportunities.  Places like Norfolk and San Diego are simple to find follow-on tours.  Recommend you don't select a small base that may require you to move after the first tour.
  • Looking down the road at taking the bar exam, you may need to take it for more than one state if  your fiance plans to make the military a career.
  • If you are married, you can get in-state tuition as a military spouse, which can be a huge cost savings.

Best of luck to you!

Also, look into MYCAA, it's a program that helps spouses of Junior Enlisted and Junior Officers pay for college. It can save you several thousand dollars.

They told me they only let you use MyCAA towards certifications and stuff like that. Not actual degrees :( I tried to put it toward my Masters possibly and they said no. but you can get other certifications to help boost your resume and its 2000$/ fiscal year, and $4000 all together! just google it and you can get information about it!

MYCAA has very specific rank and certification requirements.  It cannot be used for higher-level education, so law school would not qualify.

I wasn't sure how much it was or what degrees you can apply it towards, though I would double check about only being able to use it for certification, because I do have a friend who used it towards her Associates (might be before they changed it though, I know it used to be much more all encompassing). I wasn't sure what the details of the program are (lol, why I just encourage people to look into it, instead of offering advice on it). Just seems like a good program for those that are eligible :-)

I do think it's great that the op is interested in pursuing her law degree. Being a military spouse doesn't have to mean putting your goals on the back burner, you just have to be willing to be flexible (whether in what school you go to, or because you're willing to be apart for awhile). :-)

My fiance is also in BC right now and I am going through the same problems. I am in my first year at college right now and trying to figure out what to do for school after we get married is soooo stressful. I LOVE the school I am at right now but I would rather live with him then go to a particular school. I still don't know what I am going to do.

I understand how you feel completely.  When do you all plan to get married?

Thank you all for all for all of the things to consider.  Greatly appreciated.  Of course it is making me nervous because there are so many unknown factors.  All will be well though.  I'm just going to continue to study, and I will be able to shorten my list of schools once we determine where he will be stationed.
