Hey! Just realized I never wrote back. :) My hubs will also fly out of Portland! So funny...only person I've met with his same ship date and we live so close! His A and C school are in Great Lakes also, so he will stay there for 16wks (give or take) for that training. My hubby is originally from mexico, though he's lived here his whole life. He has his green card, but not his citizenship, which disqualified him for a lot of jobs due to security clearance. :( My hubby has a 5yr contract to begin with.... guess we'll see in 5yrs what he thinks about a career.
Hi there, my son leaves on Nov 14th as well from CA. Im feeling slightly crazy at the moment. His date was moved up from Jan 23 to Nov. 14. This is a good thing for him as he is excited to get started but of course the reality is setting in for mom here and I'm trying to just keep it together and keep busy with planning his going away party and all. So proud of my future sailor and so happy for him to start this next stage of his life, but after having him around day and night for 18 years its also hard to let go. I'm sure there are plenty others who can relate! And I would love to get to know other mom's out there going through the same experience..
Thanks! We are going with the Anchors Aweigh theme, making it a potluck since so many of our family and friends make special dishes he enjoys, figured this way he could have a little bit of love from everybody. I ordered a banner online from a place that does them for free for military families ( just pay shipping) and then we are having everyone sign a plain sailors cap as a memento for him later when he can have his stuff again :)
Also went with having everyone bring a special note of a memory or encouragement to leave in a basket so we can send them out with each letter to give him that extra boost at BC. We ordered a Navy edible cake topper as well.
Other than that cant think of any other ideas so open to any suggestions! Finding Navy party stuff online has been a challenge to say the least.
How exciting.. planning the party is so therapeutic i think!
All the best!

My son leaves from Cleveland, Ohio to be at BC on the 13th also. I understand about the holiday thing. When my son first signed up last year (Yes he signed up as a DEP in Dec. but couldn't get the job assignment he wanted at first) he was supposed to leave in August so he would have been done with boot camp before the Holidays, then I thought boot camp was only 6weeks long and thought Oh he will at least be done before New Years. Well now I realize that I probably won't be seeing my son until after the middle of January and that will make me a little sad but I keep thinking that you have to be pretty serious to want to go in at the holidays and we will have the strongest most confident sailors...I hope. What is the job your son is taking?
