Been counting down the days till my youngest son, Tate, leaves for BC on November 20th. Everytime I get on the chat line, all I can talk about is how weepy I've been ( which is very true) and you ladies are such a comfort you wouldn't believe it. To help me get out of my slump and concentrate on something positive, I'm planning a huge Thanksgiving party with both sides of the family and friends the Saturday before he ships out.
I was wondering if I would know what my son's mailing address at BC would be that close to leaving? I thought it would be a good idea to make up a bunch of envelopes with his address and a stamp to pass out to everyone at the party. Then they could jot down a note at any time he was in bc and pop it in the mail.
Does anyone have any other ideas of things we could do together to make this a memorable day for all of us, because there are a lot of people who are very proud of this young man and are excited to be included. Thanks for any input :)

Hi TateMom, congrats on your son leaving for BC, my daughter leaves the same day too. I am thinking about her party as well. You will not have his address until he mails it to you in the form letter from BC (probably should receive it around the 2nd week.) My son left for BC in October 2010 and what I did at his party was set up a table, Printed a Note off the computer (feel free to write "S" a note that I will mail to him at BC), put that in a frame added pens and paper and a covered container (a pumpkin would be cute) to store the note in. everyone at the party wrote something and it was great that every week i was able to send them to him. Another thing I did was go to the Library and took out books (for young and old) about the Navy. they were a big hit too. There are a lot of famous navy quotes that you can put in small picture frames and use that as a table decoration, you can buy the small anchors from a craft store, paint with with black chalk board paint and use them at the "bar" area to indentify drinks, pullout your red, white, blue servicing dishes and mix them into your holiday dishes. those red, white, blue star tea lite candle holders are really nice to add to the table as well, Add a few small American Flags into flower Arrangements. Hope this helps, just a few thoughts.... good luck to you and your son. My son is currently on base in Groton Ct, assigned to the USS California. The Navy has been an amazing experience for him and us as well. he has matured so much in the past two years.
Thanks pmqcakes...These are great ideas! I don't come from a military family, so this is a really big deal to everyone. The only veterans on both sides of the family are my husband and both grandfathers. As you can imagine, they are so proud, they could bust. For me, though, I'm treading on completely unfamiliar ground. I don't know anything, like when I'll get his address, for instance. Again, thanks for the great tips. This party will definitely keep my mind busy while the days chip away.
I like that idea! At first I thought I could give people his address, but then I found out I won't know what it is for about a week or two after he ships out. He'll like this. Getting cards regular while he's gone, and everyone else won't have to worry about remembering about time getting away from them and maybe not getting them out. You know he's going to be on my mind 24/7 :)
My son also leaves November 20th. The Sat. before, our 'party' is going to Thanksgiving dinner. I work Thanksgiving anyway, so the whole family will be having turkey and mash potatoes on Saturday.
My husband leaves on the 20th as well. we are having a party at a local resturant and bar, hopefully all of this friends can show him one last good time before hes off. it one week until he leaves. the holidays are going to be so lonely without him, i feel horrible for him bc the holidays are his favorite part of the year so hopefully he makes friend with you sons and they can enjoy the holidays toogether
