OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

I know many of you will be traveling to HI for the holidays. We went to HI in July for our son's wedding. We travel used Hawaiian Airlines, reservations for car with Hertz.
On arrival, it's a long walk from our gate to baggage claim. Then a wait for the shuttle to take us to Hertz. Car pickup was an hour+ wait. We arrived at 12:45 PM. We left Hertz at 3:00 PM. The rest of my family came on Alaska Airline and use Budget car rental. Everything went much smoother. They got their car in 15 minutes and beat us to the condo by an hour.
On departure, the line for security check was long. Print your boarding pass in advance if possible, use curb side baggage check if possible. We thought we were going to miss our flight. Finally, a Hawaiian rep came up to us and said they the line was shorter if we wanted to walk to another check-in point (I think it was near Alaska Airlines). He said it was a 5 minute walk. It was NO 5 minute walk - it took us 15 minutes. But the security line was quick.
On previous trips to Hawaii, we used Continental - the gate was practically across the street from Hertz, we just walked. We got our tickets in Jan for a July trip. $450 per person round trip thru Priceline.
Bring your Costco card. We got great chicken salad, Greek salad, rotisserie chicken, fresh mix fruit, pineapples, Hawaiian bread, wines. Eating out can get expensive in HI.

We also flew Hawaiian Airlines and arrived at 5 am in the morning on a Saturday.(This was in early September). Not many people there. Got right on the bus to baggage claim. Got our luggage right away and got on shuttle to Hertz. Got car right away -- no line but again it was so early in the morning.
We were flying from the east coast and broke up our travel. We flew Southwest Airlines to Las Vegas. Than switched to Hawaiian Air. Had enough layover to do this. Hawaiian Air has 3 DAILY flights from Las Vegas to Honolulu and another 3 DAILY flights from Honolulu to Las Vegas.

I fly Alaska from Seattle to Honolulu. I'm lucky because the kids bought a second car so I can use one of theirs when I want to go off on my own. I also just take a carry-on so no need to check baggage, that helps a lot!
This will be the first time I've flown over Thanksgiving and I'm anticipating all the crowds. I don't think it will be bad though since I'm going alone, no one to have to wait on or worry about his getting POed with the crowds, lol! (Love you honey!)

The first time we went to HI to visit, we found a great package thru AAA. Sheridan Hotel, Waikiki and Continental.

We have been to a number of places in Waikiki. Dinner for four was $200 w drinks. Personally I didn't eat any of the stuff from "shrimp" trucks (long lines, no place to sit). Ted's bakery/breakfast was nothing special. We did buy lots of mangos and made mango salsa to go with our salads (Foodland veggies). From Costco, we got trip tip & Kirkland frozen extra large prawn, marinated them with teriyaki, pepper and garlic salt. Add red pepper if you want a kick. Grilled them and they were perfect. Most condos have grills that you can use. We got fried rice from Panda Express.

bmello, were you able to get a gate pass to get on Ford Island without your sons after you checked in? My daughter isn't stationed in Hawaii anymore, but I'll be meeting her there next summer when her ship returns from deployment and will be staying at the Navy Lodge. I've always taken the red eye from Honolulu exept the first time I went there and the line for the department of agriculture was longer than the one going through security. .
