OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

Marriage
Hi everyone! I just have a few quick questions about marriage.
My and my Fiance are planning to do it while he's in school, and he was under the impression that we wouldnt get BAH until after he finished school. Is this correct? I have learned alot while he's in boot camp and some of the things i learn have contridicted what was told to us, so i want to make sure that one is correct. Also He goes to school dec 1st, do you think he will have enough time to get the paper work if we decided to get married over christmas break? I'm not sure how long it takes to get things like that done. Any other advice you have please feel free to share

Incorrect. Once he marries and applies for BAH, it will be backdated to the day of the marriage. It does take some time to kick in, and you will not be moved to where his school is. This is a free country, you can move yourself there. He would need to ask permission to live offbase with you as a student sailor, and short schools may deny this.
He should have plenty of time to get his chit through (which school? Some are easier than others). Takes about two weeks if he stays on top of it.

He'll be at groton for IT on subs, and it'll take 8 weeks sub school 19 week a school and 19 weeks c school and a few other schools in between. i have talked to ladies following this path said It'll take about a year. And I'll talk to him about trying for before christmas break to get it done. I was planning on moving my self so no worries on that. But i should get it even before he finishes school?? And i didnt even know he would have the option to move in with me!!! Thats wonderful news, I was going to move up there just so i would be able to see him whenever he had time off

I'm not positive about Groton... Great Lakes and P-cola allow them to move off with permission. Don't assume he can live ashore until he gets to Groton and asks. They may be stricter. Stay flexible. But yes, he will have tim eoff to see you if you live nearby even if he has to live in the barracks.
There are sub wives who post here, let's hope they see this and respond.
My nephew is on a sub right now, but he's single and already an E-5. Didn't school at Groton, he's a nuke. So the rules I know about for him wouldn't apply to your situation.

I'm in a somewhat similar situation. My fiance and I are wanting to get married while he is in A school. I'm really hoping he will be able to come home for Christmas, and we can get married here at home... but with the Navy, I guess you never know.

Every dependent spouse is eligible for BAH. He's in school, and will need to move out eventually, but they can't deny you housing because he's in training status and must reside in the barracks until you arrive and get housing. I know, it is difficult to pursue when he's in school, but "they" are incorrect, probably a low level LS who doesn't know their job properly. His chief is right. Someone needs to go to personnel and ask to talk to the chief over there.
However, it can take a month or more to kick in as the paperwork makes it through the system. Maybe that's why you haven't seen it yet. It can take eight weeks or longer if there's a glitch.

Hi Little, My son an his Fiance wanted to get married, an the recruiter told them, to wait till after BC an 2nd wk of A school. Well A school said he had to wait till he got to his 1st command post , which turned out on his hard copy to be Japan. that ment he would have to go to Japan get Permission from his CO. Then return to the states, if permitted, all taken about a year, or more, FROM NOW...all this means is they want to pass the buck on to someone else!!! in reallity, we found out that if/when he's on leave, (between duty stations) theres nothing in the navy regulations that can deny/stop him from getting Married, he's braking no laws or navy regs. so they cant stop them..All he has to do is take the marrage lic. an, other proper docs( Birth Certif & SS card..i think thats it ) to his next command ( japan) to start the process of getting her into the system.. SOOO, when he got out of A school,got his hard copy, an was on leave, he came home, set up the wedding in less then 2 wks. Nov 2nd they got married at 11am. Nov 4th by 6am, he was on a plane heading back to chicago bound for Yokosuka, Japan, landing 4:45pm on Nov 5th 2012...SO SEE,, IT CAN BE DONE

She is saying that you can get married while they are on leave, between commands, not leave like they are still in school and get Christmas leave..with out approval...BUT if you go and get married while on leave and they already have orders to their next command and that next command is Japan, you can't just move to Japan. The Sailor needs to get approval for you to move to Japan, which can take a year or can never happen.
It is best to get married while they are in "A" school (if you are going to get married) all they have to do is some paper work and take a class...if the Sailor says they can't get married during "A" school it is one of two things, one they are just lazy and don't want to do the paper work, or two...maybe they just really don't want to get married and are looking for an excuse as they don't know how to tell you.

On holiday leave, probably not many repercussions. Potentially only a real problem if the sailor is in a high security rate, but even then, the Navy can't deny a marriage unless it is already illegal. Marriages to non-citizens can jeopardize a security clearance. I'm assuming you aren't a felon or underage.
Holiday stand down is not the same thing as being on leave between commands. He is still attached to his training command, so if it is a long school, he should find out what is expected of him concerning paperwork. Still, many couples take the opportunity of being home to marry then.
Also, getting married will not mean you get to go to his next duty station if it is overseas. That's entirely different. Marrying during A school, before orders are issued is good timing for the most part.
