So I am currently faced with the dilemma whether to go to Great Lakes or not being as I will not be able to attend PIR due to the four person limit. I miss my boyfriend beyond belief but I do not know whether it would be better to wait until he is in A school to visit or whether to go to Great Lakes anyway. How much time would I get with him if I were to go see him at Great Lakes? Does anyone know how long Aviation Mechanic school is on average? Decisions...decisions....

I went to my fiancee's PIR 10/19 and if I had to do it over again I would wait and go see him at A-school. If he is staying in Great Lakes for the weekend that's different but if he is attending A-school elsewhere I would wait. I went to PIR then three weeks later flew to Virginia to see him and we had so much more time together and it was more enjoyable. Don't get me wrong PIR was great to see him but it cost alot of money for me since I'm in utah and only saw him for a few hours then 3 weeks later I spent a ton of money again. Plus with his family there we didn't get as much time where as at A-school it was just he and I. SO there are pros and cons to both but looking back I would go see him at A-school where the money was better spent and the quality and personal time was a lot more.

I don't know anything about AM school. If he is staying in Great Lakes for A school you will have Friday afternoon/evening and all day Saturday and Sunday with him. If his A school is at a different base and he will fly out Saturday, you will get to spend all day Fri immediately after graduation with him, and then you can meet him at the airport and stay with him until he flies out Saturday.

Also, just because you're not on the list doesn't mean you won't get in. Has he submitted his final list? If one of his buddies doesn't have 4 family members coming, he can ask them to add you in one of their extra spaces, and there's a waiting area if you don't get on a list where you can wait that morning in case the auditorium doesn't fill up, they allow family members and friends who weren't on the list to fill in the empty seats.
They changed the rules, if you aren't on the list, you don't get in. No more wait list. And they are discouraging adding extras for other recruits.

An AM will go to A school in Pensacola, so he's likely to be a Saturday departure. Shorter school, only a couple months in P-cola.
Anti M, is that a recent change? My friend's husband graduated last month and his additional family member was allowed in.

Yes that is a recent change

I went to my boyfriend's PIR alone and during the whole ceremony I couldn't find him because he was behind someone standing in the line right in front of me!! Not attending the actual ceremony isn't a big deal (I think). Not sure if you can enter the base right before the ceremony is over, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to just be there waiting outside the hall when they call liberty! A family member that was in my cab couldn't get into the hall and was going to wait outside but it was just too cold so she waited at the hotel instead.

I got to spend a significant amount of time with my sailor and it was WELL worth it! From 10:30AM until 6:30PM Friday, then ALL day at the airport the next day! :) I was with him Saturday from 6AM to 5:30PM. Once they check in at the airport they are allowed to leave for more liberty until their flight, but I figured since we were there I would just take advantage of every second together. I also flew out of a different airport at 8:30pm, so it's possible to spend time with him if you're leaving from different airports! Just plan accordingly as much as possible!!

If you wait to see him at A school, you will need to give him about a week or 2 to get out of phase 1. In phase 1, they cannot leave the base! Phase 2 they get off base liberty BUT curfew is 10 on weekdays, 12 on weekends (which means no sleepovers... boo!) I'm not sure how strict some A schools are but in phase 2 they are supposed to be accompanied by a "buddy" as well. Phase 3, they have full liberty privileges! No weekend curfew!! :)

My personal advice? If you miss him as much as I missed my sailor, you'll spend a significant amount of money just to see them for a few hours. I have been throwing money like crazy at Southwest recently planning all my trips to see him in San Antonio! (Haha...) I just don't feel it's important to spend my money on anything else because I miss him so much. I'm glad I didn't wait to see him in A school because it just wouldn't have felt right not being there to see him leave boot camp such a handsome sailor!! Good luck to you!!

Is your boyfriend in Hospital Corpsman School? My boyfriend is currently at boot camp graduating 1/4/13 and after is going to San Antionio for Hospital Corpsman training. If he is do you know how long the HM School is? And how long it takes to get to phase 3?

Im currently in the same situation as Michelle, figuring out if I should go to PIR or wait till A school.

Sorry for a late response, but just in case you didn't find it out from somewhere else my bf's program is approx. 14 weeks. He got there November 10th, got to phase 2 by Nov 19 (which was early), and then will be in phase 3 by the second week of January or so. I'm not sure where you're from but tickets to go to Great Lakes and tickets to go to San Antonio were the SAME price. It was a surprise to me, but that's something else to consider as well.

Very recent. It has been posted in the forums. I can go look for the official statement.

ATTENTION NOVEMBER 30TH, 2012 PIR GUESTS:

On November 30, 2012 fifteen divisions will be graduating, therefore RTC will enforce the following policy:
ALL GUESTS, including Active Duty/Retired Military Personnel and those ages 3 and older must be on the access list. (Children 2 and under do not need to be on the access list)
Individuals not on the access list will NOT be able to enter the drill hall and we do NOT have a standby list.
In addition please plan on arriving at least 2 hours before the ceremony, which begins promptly at 9:00 a.m.
Thanks, you didn't have to go through all that trouble! I just hadn't heard that and my friend's husband only graduated last month, so I figured it must have been pretty new!

Sorry for my misinformation Michelle!
Is this only for the Nov 30th PIR since it is so large with 15 divisions? My SR is graduating 1/4/13 and there is only 8 divisions so I'm wondering if they will have standby for that one
