Hi there :). So my boyfriend and I have decided that its time for me to move out to Oahu to close the distance between us. Which is fantastic and all and I'm soooooo excited. I've done a lot of research on many different things because moving so far is much different than moving somewhere locally. I know bringing a cat to the island is tricky because of all the paperwork, vaccinations, possible quarantines, etc. I'm not so concerned about that aspect, since I will basically follow a checklist. My question/concern is the flight there. Have any of you brought your pet with you from the mainland? Anyone have their cat with them n a 9 hr flight?? I know it's such an odd question and something silly for me to be worried about...but it's a pretty big deal to me. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated :)

You'll have to see if the airline will allow pets in the main cabin, you would have to buy an extra airline ticket, since you are taking up a seat. My son shipped his dog to us from Hawaii to NJ, he was well cared for and we were pleased with how the airline treated animals. While we waited to pick him up, we noticed alot of cats in their kennels being shipped, as well. At the time Continental was the airlrine we used, now United. Good luck!

Thank you so much! That makes me feel quite a bit more at ease :)
I've seen mainland flights where people had their small dogs in a soft carrier and treated as a carry on which they placed under the seat in front of them. I would suggest calling the various carriers and asking about their policy in regards to Hawaii flights. The cat would have to remain crated the entire flight. Good luck with your move! Aloha
Thank you for your reply :). I checked out a few carriers and they seem to say the same thing....if I was flying anywhere mainland, I could have him inside with me.. Since its Hawaii, he has to get shipped with the cargo....which is soooo expensive. Ugh. Lol. Between all the fees to get the cat there ($500+), shipping my car from Chicago ($2300), a plane ticket, and other misc expenses, I'm just ready for this to all be over and be moved in with him. Haha. It's a headache now, but I know it will soooooo be worth it! Aloha!!

I had forgotten about the Hawaiian law that will require your pet to be held for health checks.  I don't know how long they hold cats.  If you do all their shots before hand, they keep them for a shorter time.  Do your research, it will help make it a smoother transition.

Good luck with your move!!

I took my dog with me from TN to Latvia and had to pay a pet fee of $200 with the airline, keep him in a carrier underneath the seat in front of me but that was an international flight...didn't have to ship as cargo...might depend on the airline but you need to make sure your pet has a chip implanted and up to date on vaccinations and carry paperwork with you...had no trouble going through two other countries connecting flights with my chihuahua though.
