My son will have PIR 12/28 and take leave to come home. We are flying out of Milwaukee and taking him with us. He will be back at GL on 5 Jan. Can he fly into any airport? Does he need to find his own transportation back to base from the airport? Any info would be helpful....new to this. :) Thank you!

He can fly into any local airport. He does need to find his own transportation back but I recommend he check in with the USO. All of the local airports have one. They will help coordinate people so they can share an airport shuttle or cab and save themselves money. Hope that helps. Congratulations and welcome to the navy family!

The base isn't having shuttles running like they are the day when they go on leave.

So yes, he does have to find his own way back to the base, be it by going to the USO (if they are open, they are not open 24/7) or meeting up with other Sailors heading back to base.  The cost will come out of his pocket...so he needs to make sure he has enough cash to pay for the ride back to base.

O'hare is 24/7 and Midway is 9 AM- 9PM (24 hours as military need arises):

USO O'Hare

USO Midway

Does Milwaukee have a USO at their airport?

No it does not.

Milwaukee does have a USO. Maybe it's new.

It is maybe 6 months old...I was there when it opened and had a ceremony

Just saw this...thank you! I will find info and add it!

I don't know about military discounts, but I know Southwest Airlines is the most flexible from what I've gathered. They don't charge for bags or to change your flight (if you need to change to a different day or time).
After PIR 12/28, may the go on Liberty that day (Friday) & Saturday and then go on leave Sunday (30 Dec) through Saturday (5 Jan)??

As long as they are staying local for liberty, yes. They will have normal liberty hours. No reason why they can't start leave on the 30th. Sailors may take the entire leave period or only a portion.
