Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

San Diego Wives/Girlfriends?
Hello, so my husband and I are moving to San Diego the day after Christmas. We are still looking for an apartment, we can't decide between two different ones. One is in Mission Valley the other is in Kearny Mesa. Anyone live in either of those towns? Which one is better? Have any recommendations?
Any input would be greatly appreciated! :)

I lived in Birdland, kinda between/near both. They're not much different from each other, all the "towns" blend into each other. I'd call one of the local police stations and ask about crime.

Hey Stephanie! I live in Mission Valley! We love the area! Kearny Mesa not so much. I haven't lived there but I know the area. It's more businessy. Mission Valley is more central. Please feel free to message me for more information and when you get out here if you're looking for friends!

Hey there! I second Anti M...both these areas are pretty similar and are pretty much in the middle of everything. There's lots of restaurants and shopping close to both, I know people that live in Mission Valley and Kearny Mesa and both like where they are at. Good luck deciding!

I live in mission valley as well. Were about a 20 minute drive from base in normal traffic. I imagine being in Kearny Mesa would add another 10 minutes to that commute.
Both areas are very central. You'll be 20 minutes from anywhere - downtown, the beaches, rural areas, popular restaurants, shopping, etc.
If you like both apartments equally I would go with anti Ms advice and look at crime rates, or crime maps for the immediate areas around the houses.

Depending on the location Kearny Mesa will be a better commute. Mission Valley roads always have tons of people on them (2 big malls in the area AND Qualcomm Stadium). Kearny Mesa has a big selection of Asian cuisine. From where I live in San Diego (Imperial Beach) It will take me about 25 minutes to get to Kearny Mesa. Since you'd be going Northbound on the 5, you wouldn't have any issues with morning commute if your hubby is working at 32nd street. There are other bases (Miramar, North Island) so that is gonna be a huge factor in deciding where to live! Good luck to you and congrats on getting San Diego. I may be bias, but there's no better city on the West Coast. You'll love it here! :)

I love all the Asian restaurants and markets in Kearny Mesa! Have you been to the Fruit Shop? One of my favs!
And I love living here as well, we are actually on the Strand, super close to IB....its so great, I love that there's so much to do here!! -

Neither my husband nor I ever have trouble with commute in Mission Valley. His base and where I work are both the opposite way of traffic so it's actually a really easy drive to work. Kearny Mesa is farther from base than Mission Valley is, like AbsoluteKraze said it's about another 10 minutes.

Hey! My husband and I lived in Mission Valley for 2 and 1/2 years. He was stationed on the coronado base and also the one on 32 street and he never had issues with traffic until he got to the gate because of everyone getting there around the same time, but that'll happen no matter where you are. It isn't too far from the bases. We loved mission valley. I had lots of job oportunities there. There is so much to do there. We lived in the Promenade Rio Vista. It is an expensive area but we really loved living there. It is close enough to anything you'd want to do I'd think.
I don't know anything about Kearny Mesa, I've probably been there but I don't remember it. Good luck on your search!!
