Hey Ladies, I have a question. When is a good time to get married in "A School"? What kind of paperwork does my S/O fill out to be able to get married? I heard they receive their Duty Station orders a month before they graduate is that true?

My S/O will be attending "A School" in Port Hueneme California

Thank you very much for your help!!! Any informational links would be great too :)

I have almost no answers for you because I am in the same boat.  For starters, you can get married at any point, you just need to have him send you a signed piece of paper and then present it to a judge.  Then he will need to update his marriage status, etc etc, and it will take a while for the Navy to recognize the marriage.  But he doesn't need approval or anything to get married.

Our plan is to marry at the courthouse once he reaches phase 2, then I'd move there about 2.5 months afterwards so the Navy has processed his paper work, I've filled out whatever paperwork I need to do, we have housing set up and *hopefully* they will pay for me to move out there.  That's about as far as we have it until he gets done with Boot.  I'm anxious to see the answers.

Most A schools actually yes they need to fill out a chit to get married. which is a request for permission. The signed paper might be referring to the signed paper you have to have to get an ID withouth him there. but if they dont get approval they can get in trouble. My husband almost got in trouble even with being told by multiple LPOs to fill out the chit. The chief got mad because it wasnt on the books. He was going to give him extra watches so he couldnt leave to get married.

As far as moving you, the Navy will not pay to move you to his a school after he has already gotten there and since he already had orders as a single sailor to A school. and in some A schools they cannot live off base. Its called a live ashore chit. So he will have to ask at his school if his rate is allowed to do that. (I dont know specifcally for that school) and I have heard in some places they will not allow sailors in school and their families to live in school. I dont know if that is true or if there just wasnt housing available when the person tried to apply.

Yeah, we have so much in the air right now.  And I wish there was consistent information out there... his recruiter never told us he had to get permission for us to marry :-/

He will be in Monterey for 16 months so we know we qualify for off-base living and by the time I move there, he will have been there for close to 4 months.

And I have a pretty good feeling I'll be paying to move most of my stuff but I'm curious... since he is moving off base, would they not pay to move *his* stuff up to him?

Yeah I understand. Thats the Navy way unfortunately. But yes 9 times out of ten they will have to request permission with a chit... pretty much its just to make sure the sailors arent getting married just for benefits or arent jumping into something they really cant handle. Thats why they usually have to talk to the chaplain or take a class about finances, or relationships or something like that. From what I heard they rarely if ever say no and if they do its for a big reason. like you just met that girl yesterday... ya know? lol Its pretty much a formality but one he needs to make sure he does.

Thats good!! It will be pretty easy to find some apts and places like that relatively close that are cheap I am sure :) I actually was born in Monterey, CA.. well Fort Ord technically. but its gone now.

Yeah I would imagine you will be paying. And no probably not just because they typically dont move single sailors for A school. There are some exceptions but its not the norm so they are making that choice to move their stuff, the military would still give him a place to stay if he didnt so in their mind thats his choice to do that. You might see about trying to rent a furnished apt and then getting your stuff moved to his duty station but if he is going to be there that long I think it would probably be easier to move as much of your stuff as you can (purge as much as you can beforehand) and then yall can start building your collection and have it moved to the first duty station. If his BAH kicks in before you move he can start saving that for the move and deposit and whatnot. and with tax season coming up yall can maybe both save your tax returns and use those too? Idk not trying to intrude just throwin out ideas. One thing I have learned with the Navy is to have lots of plans! and lots of back up plans!

He needs to fill out a chit to get married, yes they do have to request permission. Some A schools require classes or that they talk to some higher ups or the chaplain about it. Then afterwards he will need to update his page two. He will need to ask when he gets to a school to find out what all they will want for him to add you, my husband didnt have anything except our marriage certificate but I have heard people need some other paperwork at different schools. Its best to get your ID when you are there with him getting married. Phase 2 or 3 is typically the best time to get married because they have more freedom to leave base easier. When they recieve orders can really vary. My husband got his about a month before he graduated but I know people that have gotten them a few days before or even a few months after they graduate. If you can find a group on here for that a school or his rate specifically they might know better what the trend is for his school.

Thank you! I know he needs to fill chit form and fill a form so I can be his liberty buddy :) I am hoping he doesnt receive orders until we are married. Thank you for the help

You are welcome. Yeah I forgot about the chit for liberty buddy. Mostly because since my husbands LPO told him wrong he let him leave with me anyways lol. Do you know how long his a school is? I would say try to get down there as soon as he hits phase 2, just to be safe but if his school is longer and the orders get handed out closer to time. Sorry I can be more help in relation to that. My husband got his orders halfway through his but his a school was only 8 weeks so ours was all about timing! lol he got there feb 15th and we married march 14th and he got orders about april 24th. He had a three week wait time I think to start classes. that will be in your favor sort of if he had some hold time to class up.

His A school is 14 weeks give or take if there is a wait time. I just hope we get married in time so I can be on his orders. How long did it take to fill out all the paperwork for DEERS etc? Are you able to fill out all that paperwork within a week and have it be official?

Oh I imagine he will have plenty of time!! Because there will probably be a few weeks of hold time too. Are you sure its 14 weeks? I know my husband was told his would be 5 weeks and then upon looking harder we learned it was actually 8 weeks because it was 40 days which they only count weekdays or school days! lol a little bit of a shocker for us! But either way I am thinking as long as yall are on top of it you should be fine! It doesnt take too long honestly as long as they have everything he needs. When he first gets there he should go to admin or ask a chief what he needs to fill out the paperwork to add you to his page two (thats the important part for the detailer to know he is married.) If you can stay and get your ID taken care of there it will help you out a bit on your end. Take your birth certificate and ss card and DL or ID with you they will want that stuff for the ID office too :) Typically it doesnt take too long to get it all taken care of, my husband filled out our paperwork three times (they kept sending it back saying he was spelling my name wrong... lol ya know cuz they would know better than him how to spell my name lol so he had to go in and tell them my name actually has an extra "a" in it) but even with that we got bah by the april first paycheck so I was on his page two one weeks after we got married. becuase we got married the 14th and by the 21st they already have entered in how much the guys will get paid the check for the first.

So in a long rambling way its possible it can get taken care of quickly. If he has everything he needs and has his ducks in a row it will help the process go smoother. :)

Good to know!  Thanks!!  Where was his A School?

Pensacola :) I have heard its semi strict so some things might be more lax at other schools but more strict as well.

Navydads.com said 68-89 calender days so I was wrong it can be 9-12 weeks! Thank you for the help. I'll bring all those documents with me. I plan on staying a week. If the paperwork takes a bit longer I'll stay longer. We were going to get married before boot camp but the recruiter lied to us as I later found out.
