My son leaves at the end of February and has a permanent retainer on the back of his bottom teeth. He also wants one on the top so they do not shift during basic and "A" school. Will they allow him to keep the retainers he has in or will they try to remove them? I have also been hearing a rumor that they will send him home from basic to get them removed even though they are permanent are require no further work or upkeep. I know they will not allow braces at basic but I am not so sure as to whether they will allow permanent ones or not. Can someone please inform me on the subject? Thanks

If he already has a contract to leave, he can not just go and get permanent retainers...he needs to get approval to do that from the Navy.  also if he already has permanent retainers, he should have had a waiver to join the Navy.  If there is no waiver, yes there can be issues.

Hello!

my daughter has a permanent retainer on bottom and a removable retainer for the top and she left for boot camp today. she checked out during MEPS and since she reported her removable retainer during her first initial MEPS, it was ok so far. She hasn't  said anything yet. but it is too soon to know for sure . I'll keep you posted

I have a permanent bottom retainer that I've had for a very long time.  I went to boot camp almost 4 years ago.  They didn't say much other then then wanted to take it out to redo it because they said the compound used wasn't good but I've had it for 16 years and I told them not to take it out and they didn't.  But things change all the time so who knows.
