DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

I read that its best to fly in and out of MKE, but then is there enough time to hang out with your sailor before they fly out of midway or ohare? There is only one flight that I can take on Saturday and its at 3:30. would that be enough time? anyone know how far mke is from the airport the sailors fly out of?

Is your flight 3:30 in the morning or afternoon? RTC starts busing the SRs to each airport around 12:30-1, 2:30-3, and 4:30-5, those are estimated time. My SR was to leave RTC at 3 headed to Ohare but due to snow they left late and arrived to the airport around 4-4:30. The time you get to spend with him/her really depends on what time their flight is scheduled for. We spent about 6 hours at Ohare with him because his plane left at 10:30, some are earlier and some are later. You will find out what his/her orders are the week of PIR but flights can be changed up to the day of PIR. Also, the sailors fly out of Ohare, Midway and one other that I'm blanking of the name. Ohare is about 30 miles from RTC and is the closest. Hope this helps some!

Last weekend my Sailor left RTC, along with 189 others, at 7 AM, headed for Midway. Her flight left for Florida at 12:20 pm. My flight left from O'hare that evening. I had no problems at all flying into O'hare, note seeing her off at Midway and making it back to rewritten rental at O'hare by 11 am. Didn't know of any parents who used Milwaukee.

Once you get out of Chicago traffic, north to Milwaukee is a breeze. We flew in and out of O'hare, but we stayed a few days after PIR (originally we were told he was staying in GL till Tues, which 2 years ago wasn't unheard of). My sons plane to SC was at 7:30am, so had a few hours at the gate. Others do leave later in the day.

My son flew out of O'Hare. He was dropped off by RTC at 0600 (6:00 am) for a flight that did not leave until 1845 (that's 6:45 pm). We spent 12 hours with him at O'Hare since they are not allowed to leave the airport. I can tell you ALL about Terminal 3 and the automatic toilets! It was great to visit with him after not seeing him for 8 weeks! And chipsgirl is right...flights can be changed up to the night before. My son did not know what flight he was on until the night before.

Only your Sailor will know his specific flight details and not until the week of PIR in most cases. It all depends on flight availability and the earliest flights of the Sailors what time they get to the airports. You will have some time with him with a flight at that time. MKE is good for some and MDW has had better fares for others, so check out flights to/from all 3 airports. The Sailors fly out of either O’Hare International Airport or Midway International Airport. PIR Day and Liberty During PIR Weekend will tell you more.

Thanks, ladies! I really appreciate everyones input! I feel so overwhelmed trying to get in the most time with my sailor, but staying within our budget.

To really be honest, I didn't spend a lot of money! Everything except my rental was paid for before I left and the rental was only $60 for 2 days! The fact that after PIR, we spent 6 hours at the hair salon probably helped my budget! But that's what she wanted to do! Lol!

generally the flights into Milwaukee are cheaper and driving to GL was a breeze, I have flown into both O'Hare and Midway and if given the choice I would go to Milwaukee. If you are not used to driving in heavy traffic Chicago can be overwhelming for some, it did not bother me but I drive in Los Angele on a fairly regular basis, it can be a frustrating experience. I will be flying into Milwaukee for this PIR in April. If you can book your flight to leave either late Sunday or Monday if possible to be able to spend the maximum time with your recruit. There are many different opinions and you have to go with what works best for you.

Leaving late Sunday or on Monday is our suggestion for those who have Sailors staying in GL for "A" School or training and leaving late Saturday or on Sunday is our suggestion for those with Sailors who will fly out to "A" School or training since they typically fly out on Saturday after PIR.

i believe MKE is in Wisconsin so it is north of Great Lakes so probably over 1 1/2hr

MKE is Milwaukee County’s General Mitchell International Airport and is located 50 miles from the RTC.
