Hello everyone - my son wants his car on base in Goose Creek and we live in California. We have looked into shipping his car to SC and it looks like it will cost around $1000. We've looked into driving it as well but it looks like it might cost the same when you consider gas, hotels and food. Does anyone know of a military discount or a cheaper way to get his car to Goose Creek? Thanks for your help!

Hi Rxdocd - my son is also in Goose Creek and we are in California too (Riverside).  I'm anxious to see if you hear of anything else - we got a quote from Agape Auto Transport (got their name from the nuke site!) and our quote was $945.00.

I retrieve the following information gathered from other members in the San Francisco Bay Area group.

Found this info on Kathryn's page.
"As a followup to shipping Steven's car. We ending up shipping Steven's car using Dependable Auto Shippers (www.dassutoshippers.com). The car was shipped on time and without any additional costs from the initial quote. The car was undamaged and Steven was able to pick up the car at a dropoff depot near Goose Creek (actually in Charleston) at his convenience. All in all we can recommend DAS shipping from the Bay Area (CA) to Goose Creek (SC)."

Hi -- We have transported our son's car many times now from California to NY and back for college and now for Navy change of stations. The company we use is All American Auto Transport on Rollins Rd in Burlingame, CA,(800-886-7135). They have been very reliable and once the driver gets on the road---pretty fast. It is costly--esp with fuel prices--but it saves so much wear and tear on the vehicle. Good luck to you and your son!

My son is shipping his truck from Maui to Oakland on Horizon Lines www.horizonlines.com. This company ships the vehicle in a container so it will not be exposed to the elements. $1075.00

We have a number of members in the San Fran group from Modesto. Come hang with us. It's an active group with a many meet and greets - we have one tomorrow in Walnut Creek. I probably won't be there because of work but the link for signing up is on the SF page (or click on Jan 19 on the calendar on the right column). Here's the link. Just click on it and click +JOIN.  Emilysmom from Modesto recently join the San Fran group - I can remember her daughter's rating.  Many nukes from Bay area/Central Valley.

Good luck to your sailor

BTW, our son drove his car from the Bay area to SC, from there to Ballston Spa, NY for Prototype, then to Groton, CT for Sub School. He had to drive the car to New Jersey for shipping (arranged by Navy) to Hawaii where he was stationed for 3 years. Everything worked out well.

Shipping is better for the car. No wear and tear. (Especially on the drivers.) Your sailor can write off the shipping costs under "Moving Expenses" on his tax return the year it is shipped. Moving expenses are pretty flexible for military personnel.

StephenC

Stephen, that is exactly what we said to both our sons but they both insisted on driving the vehicles themselves. I have to admit I have driven from the East Coast to West Coast a number of times and they were wonderful trips - some of the best times of my life. You don't get the full scope of the immensity (and diversity) of this country until you have gone from coast to coast. It really makes you appreciate this country. Every region is different. I am looking forward to seeing the Pacific Northwest and the South when we retire.

BQB very true. This country is beautiful and a must see for everyone. Moving boxes of cloths and in this case a car, is difficult for some. Most are working and can't get away. Road conditions are poor at best this time of year. So it is a personal choice.

In 1975 my girlfriend and later wife and I took one year off and toured the USA. It was wonderful. We camped most of the time but in big cities we stayed at hotels. The big thing it puts lots of miles on the vehicle, and on the drivers. So at 70 and 65 we would ship his car across the country. We would drive the car to San Diego from Santa Rosa CA. for fun. So it all depends.

I enjoy your postings. You do an excellent job explaining  what us "Newbies" need to know.

Any one have any information shipping vehicles from Goose Creek to the west coast.

In this case Washington state ?

Hi NF Mom - we got a quote from Agape Auto Transport (found them on this site) for $945 from Riverside, CA to Goose Creek.  Haven't used them yet though - son is trying to decide when he wants his car.....and I think he doesn't want to spend the $$ yet - LOL

Thanks BNM,

Looks like my husband is going to have to get some quotes on shipping one from Goose Creek back to the west coast.

Orders on Friday, detach 7 days later.  Nothing like getting those orders cut early.

I should bite my tongue, the orders gave him the home port and the boat he wanted.

Everything else is pure gravy, my son will be on the other side of our home state, instead of the other side of the country.
