My daughter's PIR was 03/01/13 ... Everything was wonderful! ... the ceremony was moving, Chicago is a great city ... the people there are warm, friendly and fun!! But let me tell you about the hotel!!!!!!

... We stayed at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Deerfield ... The location was convenient to the base and airports (we flew in from o'hare and took my daughter to midway to fly off for her A school)  ... The hotel was AMAZING! We paid $84.15 per night for a 'King Executive' ... it has two rooms and since it was myself and my husband travelling with my daughters friend it was nice to have the privacy of a 'second' separate room (the living area has its own tv, and a pull out couch bed that is quite comfortable ... there are just too many amenities to mention in this post so just let me say here that:

1. The complimentary breakfast includes cooked to order omelets and an amazing selection of everything you could ever want to start your day ... all fresh and delicious!

2. The 'managers reception' held every night for a couple of hours allows you to enjoy a nice variety of finger foods, snacks ... and of course ... cocktails!!! ... When we added up what we saved in breakfast and liquor every day during our stay we figure the room was actually free!!!

3. The Embassy Shuttle will take you anywhere you want to go within like a three mile radius ... we used it twice ... saved us on gas, allowed us to enjoy a lovely meal at a wonderful restaurant where we could 'toast' away without worrying about a designated driver AND ... being from Florida ... it made us feel a bit more comfortable because sometimes the ice on the roads was a bit intimidating.

I could go on and on ... everything was top notch ... everyone was warm and friendly and helpful ... the room was super clean and beautiful!

I DID book my room early ... which is one reason that I think I got such a good rate (I booked 02/18 and stayed 02/28-03/04) and we stayed for five days, so that may have been a factor in the pricing but still!! ... AMAZING!!!! I will never stay at another hotel anywhere ... ever again!!

How about shuttle service to PIR, pennymac300? I only need a decent clean hotel, breakfast buffet, gym if possible, but most importantly, early early shuttle to base so I can get good seats!

How far is the hotel to RTC GL?  Tks.

mapquest indicates it's about 29 minutes--more or less depending on traffic--from the Embassy Suites Hotel in Deerfield to the RTC.

I give the Ramada a 4 1/2 star. I am glad I didn't listen to the reviews posted by others. I do suggest if you have handi-cap or elederly parents that they stay on the 1st floor. The Servers and bartenders were first class. Very friendly. There is a free shuttle to the PIR, which saved me money. I have nothing, but good things to say about the RAMADA.
The best choice I made was using Sarge and Dave for Taxi service. These guys were the BEST. I can't brag enough about them. So yes, the Ramada is a good place to stay and Sarge is like family!!!

Are there any places within walking distance to the base?

I am rephrasing my question,

what would be agood place to stay for a single traveller on foot.I intend to take the train from O'Hare to Great Lakes and hope to get by without a car rental.

No, there are no places to stay that it would be safe to walk to the RTC from.  Some have been able to share a ride with another family in either their vehicle or in a shuttle or taxi.

Thanks, I will look for ride sharing/shuttles then

You can sit infront of the Divisions. I was lucky, Div 105 was the closest to the door. The most awesome picture was with a blare. It's when the doors open and the troops march in, that the background lighting was too bright for my camera, but what an amazing sight!!

My son only stayed with me until 7pm and went back to base. I did get up at 2am and sat with him at the airport until 6:30am. I didn't know my son's flight was delayed. He texted me 11am and said he was airborne.

I highly encourage people to use Sarge for all their taxi needs. The more you share, the cheaper the fare!

I am still confused after reading these posts since many of them seem to be a few years old. I am looking for a decent place to stay that preferably offers a shuttle service, I am also considering Navy Lodge (and get shuttle to PIR from outside)

I do not want to rent a car , and I will come to Great Lakes by Metra.

Also would like to know if Navy Lodge would be a good place cause it might be easiest to meet up with my daughter after graduation or in the eve before she flies to A school (Saturday)

PIR date is 5/3/13

Sorry if I am a bit redundant....

There are old and new posts in this discussion. Your Sailor will leave with you on Liberty after PIR and will have to return to the RTC before Liberty expires (she'll know the time) and then you will be able to meet her at the airport and spend time with her.  (See PIR Day and Liberty During PIR Weekend for more on that.)

If you are considering the Navy Lodge, check out the discussion, Navy Lodge. (beverly is associated with the Navy Lodge.)
