when we moved we used uhaul. any moving company is going to be really spendy. and since you two are not married yet the navy wont pay to move you or reimburse you for your stuff :/ the only thing I can say is DRIVE SLOW lol that helped us save gas money with our huge uhaul :P depending on his rank, they probably wont let him apply for base housing until he fills out the papers for you guys being married and they get processed. that's something he can ask is sponsor to get the process moving faster . if you stay in base housing they take all of your BAH. if you live off base you get BAH . we pocket money living off base, but it all depends if you can fine a home in your price range and how much your utilities will be and that fun stuff. and depending on the area, sometimes is best to stay on base b/c of high crime rate :/ hope this helped a little :)
If you guys get married during his leave before moving the military would re-issue new orders to include his married status and they will pay for you to move. I would suggest discussing this with him before hand. Also, I agree with Urabiss Wife...the crime rate in some areas of San Diego leaves much to be desired....having lived there as a kid, I would have rather lived on base if housing had been available.
Here's the link to Lincoln housing, which manages the Navy housing communities. They aren't "on base", although they are secure areas. He can't get on the list until he checks in and gets you in his record as a dependent. But you can take a look at what is offered, look at maps of San Diego, see where everything is located. He WILL be commuting, no matter where you live.

Number of bedrooms is assigned by number of dependents (and their age and gender). However, I think the smallest unit is two bedroom.
