We are going to San Diego!!!
Not excited about being 13 states away from family but I've never been there so excited about that.
Anyone know any apartments near the Naval Base San Diego?
Thanks in advance

Here's the thing with San Diego. The closer it is to base (main base on 32nd street, there are a few bases in San Diego area), the more expensive rent is. We lived in Murphy Canyon/Aero Ridge housing and it was pretty nice, a 30 min drive to the Amphib base on Coronado Island, it was only about 20 minutes from 32nd St. Which base is he going to be going to? If he doesn't mind a drive every day, I've heard Temecula is very nice, lower rent with lots of space. It's about 45 minutes from 32nd St. My husband's CMC said he's lived in that area for 10 years and he doesn't mind the drive. Most mil housing takes all your BAH, but BAH for a junior sailor is $1986/month so if you can get something for less than that including utilities, you'd save some money.
If you are interested in mil housing, here is Lincoln's San Diego page. Lincoln Military Housing - San Diego
You can see how much rent is at each of the Lincoln properties here: Enlisted Wait Times I found this page very helpful because it lists the pets allowed and rent amount for each property. Don't let the wait times throw you off, the place we were offered has a 2 month wait time listed and we got right in and for more bedrooms than we technically needed.
There are usually immediate openings listed on the "Hot Sheet" which you can find here: How to Apply. Scroll a little ways down to where is says Currently Available in bold letters and click on the link below it. It is updated every week on Mondays usually. (The Enlisted Wait Times link is further down on the same page, I see that it does update also, but I don't know the schedule for that).
If you have questions about housing, I may be able to help. We were only there for 6 months but that means I've done the move in and move out and all the paperwork, too. I actually still have all the copies of our lease, housing policies, etc. Send me a message or add me. Good luck, moving sucks. :)
The Lincoln properties don't take all the BAH?
Thanks for all the info, not really sure where. No hard copies
Most of the properties do take all of BAH. Some don't, which you can see here: Enlisted Wait Times If there is no rent $$ listed, they take all of BAH. HTH!
Here is the BAH calc, BAH Calculator. You can enter the DUTY zip code and your Sailor's rank and see what the allowance is. For instance, our address was 92124 (Aero Ridge) and my husband's BAH was based off of his duty zip of 92135 (on the orders). It was the same for each zip. The only issue I imagined having was when the kids and I moved home while he deploys. The BAH is VERY different for our home zip than it was for San Diego. I checked and double checked with the Command Master Chief to make sure this was legit and he said all was ok. (as an aside, I didn't just call the CMC randomly, I am the Ombudsman, so have regular dealings with him and brought up the subject of BAH during a different convo relating to deployment. I would not recommend anyone calling the CMC out of the blue. Start with your Ombudsman and they will connect you! Or the servicemember can talk to his chain of command about whatever issue you have questions about.)
Unfortunately, anything within walking distance of 32nd St. is in a pretty shady neighborhood. I was on Shore Patrol outside that base and wouldn't recommend it.
We lived up above Mission Valley, between Serra Mesa and Linda Vista. Pretty close, but still not convenient. Will he have a car to commute at least?
I know that saving BAH is enticing, but in San Diego, the landlords all know the BAH rates. You won't pocket that much unless you rent a real rathole, or are far out and then you'll be using the extra money on gas. That's just an opinion, of course, but Lincoln housing might be a good option. Also, look at a map of San Diego, the airport is downtown, so there's areas under the flight paths you won't want (we were looking at a cheap place when a plane landed, shook the whole place).
The lincoln housing is nice, but you will get sick of having your BAH completely taken. If you do some research on the areas then you can know where to generally stay out of. If you decide to go with non-military housing this is a good site to use : http://www.ahrn.com/
