Hello everyone!

These questions have branched from both my own curiosity and my boyfriend's lack of knowledge (I'm not saying he's unintelligent, it's just that he isn't given answers at the moment).

My boyfriend is currently a FC in A-school on the Naval base in Illinois. He graduates on 31 May and was able to choose his C-school orders on Monday. He was really hoping to get a spot in the AEGIS C-school program, however, there were no vacancies available for anyone. His instructors told him that his best bet would to take the 2 year shore duty they offered to potentially train in the AEGIS system later on.

His instructors had also told him that just because he chose those orders, doesn't mean that's what he will be given (which we both knew). And FC's don't normally get shore duty. But with all the major budget cuts, etc things could be a little different. He has not been given final documentation yet, and is not sure when. He was told, "You'll get them when you get them." We understand that this is mainly a waiting game, and we're used to it; he being in the Navy and I working for the U.S. Government, you get used to that ;P But we were hoping that you all could help us out and give us a little clue into what the near future could potentially hold for us.

If he is granted shore duty and later on enters the AEGIS program, he will be stationed only an hour and 45 minutes away from me in Dahlgren, VA. (Yay! I never thought I'd be so lucky!!! All of you with loved ones deployed, stay strong! You'll see them again soon, even though it feels like forever right now.) Now, if he is transfered there, will he be allowed to take leave since he won't be in student status (as long as it's not a duty day - we're not sure how that base works with duty swaps either, if allowed)?

So the two main questions:

  1. Do FC's get shore duty, or is it very rare?
  2. Will he be able to use leave if granted shore duty, as long as it's not a duty day?

Thank you everyone, so much, for all the knowledge you share with everyone on here. It's a wonderful community to be a part of. I have no idea how I would have gotten through the time my Sailor was in bootcamp if this didn't exist. You all give so much support and care about one another on an astronomical level, and it's absolutely inspiring and very much appreciated.

Sending good luck, warm thoughts, and strength your way! Go Navy!

FCs have a sea-shore rotation.  Usually it begins with sea duty, 60 months.  After that, an FC would get 36 months shore duty.   Because the schools are backed up/under-funded, FCs have been sent to ships without a C school (called quad zeros) and then sent to C school when the seat opens.  They can do a little hands on, but they're primarily doing grunt work.

He may get shore duty as described if they're doing something to make use of the FCs while waiting for C school.  It would pretty much be like a day job, with a few duty days each month.  Nothing as drastic as a school command.  He might have shift work though, no way to tell until he checks in.  Overall, think early morning to afternoon, five days a week, with duty days.

Leave?  Do you mean vacation days when he can travel far away from the base?  Those are asked for in writing, depends on how much he has earned, and what his command needs.  If you mean regular weekend/holiday tome off, that's liberty.  Yes, he will have that.  However, he can't go outside a recall limit.  That's usually around 300~450 miles.  He'd have to take leave to travel farther than that.

He will probably get a week to ten days leave after A school once he gets some kind of orders in hand.  Plus a couple free travel days too.

Oh boy, lots of different possibilities, but I guess that's the military for ya!

We know he'll get liberty, but we were thinking about taking actual leave to travel past the recall limit (back to Chicago around 4th of July time frame). He'll definitely need a chit for that then.

Thanks for the answers! This gives us more more intel into what could/will happen. :)

Yeah, there's no way to know if a new command would approve that or not before he even knows where he's going!

Best of luck to you both.

Very true! I guess we'll just wait and see what happens! He think he'll move in June, so not too far off!

Thanks! :)
