Moving Home During Deployment

Hello,

So we have been living in San Diego the last year & a half while my husband was finishing school. Now he's finished and has just received orders to a ship that will be deploying shortly after (less than a month) after we get to his new duty station. Obviously this is not something we expected, and we were hoping to have time to settle in together before he had to leave for a deployment. With him having to leave right away now, we've been considering having me move back home during his deployment, and then when he comes back I'll move to where he is. We wanted to know if this possible and allowed. We don't want to do anything that will get us in trouble or raise any red flags. It would just be nice to be home with my family and friends while he's gone instead of being alone in a new state where I don't know anybody.

Has anyone done this? Is it allowed? How does it affect PCSing and BAH? Thank you in advance!

Thanks Meagan! I don't NEED our stuff if I do move home, I just wasn't sure what the protocol was so thank you for explaining. In that case I'll probably just take my clothes & necessities and have the rest stored in VA. Luckily we have a lot of friends in VA already so I think that will help us get settled, and it's all so far away that we haven't decided when I will move there yet but it will definitely be before his ship comes back home, even if it's just to be there for the homecoming! I've heard lots of not so great things about the area so we definitely want to take our time in finding a home, which is another reason we think it might be best for me to just go home during his deployment, so we're not rushed into settling for a house or condo we're not 100% sure about!

you are welcome :) Yeah that's what I did as well. I had my stuff moved and then just kept enough clothes for my stay and whatnot. It was a lot easier! Then when I was headed here I called and made an appt for them to bring my stuff the day after I got my keys and it worked out perfectly! And it was so much easier than worrying about my stuff lol. That's great to hear you have friends here! I would say def reach out and see if you can come up here maybe to look at some places and crash with them!

 

this area is tricky and here is why, you could send me an address that is a few streets down or across street from me, and while I might live in a super quiet area that is really nice, where you are looking could be a little not so awesome. lol Its not like there is a centralized area that is "not good" and then a separate area that is the area to live in ya know? lol other than downtown Newport news. haha I was raised in the ghetto and we were looking at a house there and I literally told my husband turn around now. lol It takes a lot for me to say that. but there are some really awesome areas too! I totally agree about not being rushed to find a place! I know rent was high in SD but be ready for some sticker shock.. in the sense that they charge dangerously close to BAH here. Its crazy. The apartments of course know what BAH is here and the good ones are not afraid to charge for almost all of BAH like 1400$ for an apt lol. When BAH for up to E4 is like 1450 or something.

Thanks Meagan. We will definitely be doing our research before we settle on a place-another reason we don't want to have to rush pick a place to live in a hurry and under stress!!

Angie, do you know if they would allow me to stay in San Diego while he's deployed? I have a really great job out here and while I know the Navy doesn't are about that, if I could continue working while he's deployed it would help us financially and it would help my sanity. Just exploring options!
