REQUIRED Courses BEFORE A-school even starts! Let your DEP know to start now before leaving to GL

**** The above is not for ALL navy recruits ONLY for certain ratings, but please have your DEP check with recruiter*** MY daughter, from the Napa/Solano, California area, leaves to Great Lakes on 7/17/13 from the Sacramento MEPs station. She has been in the DEP program since 4/13.

I'm still learning the N4Msite (very grateful that it exists & to know there is plenty support when I need it)

One of the groups I joined is the GROUP: Sailors in Pensacola, Florida for A-School & read DISCUSSION: Arriving in Pensacola, it gave valuable information about A school but this one part is a MUST read!!! It had me shaking my head! Here's what I read:

ATT and AWAT Courses

Apprentice Technical Training and Aviation Warfare Apprentice Training are two additional course that you sailor may need to complete prior to classing up in his/her technical A-school class.  The time it takes to complete these courses are not included in the number of days or months quoted for A-school.  You sailor will not be seated (classed up) into A-school until the preliminary courses are completed.

ATT is required by all sailors and is taught online.  The Navy has recently decided to permit those delayed entry participants (DEP) to take this course on line prior to entering boot camp.  These new sailors are coming to the schoolhouse almost a full 25 days ahead of their shipmates.

AWAT is comprised of self-paced, Interactive Courseware (ICW) which allows each student individual control of the information delivery rate.  This course is required of all Aviation ratings.  With 20 classrooms and 30 students per class, AWAT has a capacity of 600 students weekly. The course is designed to be completed in a 33-hour period, which includes 17.5 hours of AWAT and 16.5 hours of basic corrosion control training.

If you sailor wants to get moving fast, tell them to jump at the opportunity to get into these online classes

The above was from the Discussion: Arriving in Pensacola in Group: Sailors in Pensacola, Florida for A-School... As a new member and a mother of a DEP, I HIGHLY recommend everyone that knows their sailor will be sent to Pensacola, join the group and read the discussion in full! Great information there!!!

I am quite disappointed that it was never mentioned to my DEP that there are required courses to take before even starting A-school, and to know those days/months that it takes to complete these required courses is not quoted for A-school.

If your DEP still has required meetings to go to before leaving to bootcamp, I suggest they ask their recruiter for the web site information to get these required courses done, as I am having my DEP do. I have not been able to find the website myself but if anyone knows what website these courses can be done at PLEASE share!!!

Thanks!!!

http://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=27534 tells more about it. Here is a study course for it http://jacquesricher.com/NEETS/, but I'm not sure how current it is since it is from 2003. Navy Knowledge Online (NKO) at https://wwwa.nko.navy.mil/ is where your future Sailor will sign in to take the course, but it requires a password, but her recruiter can help with that.

ATT is self-paced, but takes about 6 weeks when completed after BC.

What would us mothers do without you, lemonelephant?! Thank you for the information especially with the websites!

My daughter will be speaking with her recruiter and can hopefully start the course tomorrow. She can add this to her other studying she has been doing. At least there is still a few more weeks left before she ships off.

You are very welcome, I'm glad I could help.

Sometime between now and the end of BC, you will want to check out Sailors In Pensacola, FL For A School....Corry Station too!! and Parents of A School Sailors in Pensacola. There are no groups for just loved ones of AM's, but you may find some in Airman Family and Friends. The Rating Information Card for AM can be found at https://www.cool.navy.mil/enlisted/rating_info_cards/am.pdf.

Hi kam'smom, Although our daughters aren't in the same rate (she's ABH)  I'm sure they'll meet somewhere along the way and maybe we'll get to meet at PIR! Hope all goes well!

FYI, rate = rank for other branches or pay grade and rating = job or occupational specialty. Your future Sailor will have the rate of E-1 (AR), E-2 (AA), or E-3 (AN) (but she will be an SR in BC) and go to "A" School for the rating of ABH. We don't generally talk much about the rate that the future Sailors will have and the terms rate and rating are often confused.

The above needs a correction that I did not read before.

Only those Sailors who are contracted for a rating that has an electronics component require ATT.  There are more ratings that do not require ATT than do.

Thanks for clarification lemonelephant,
