I'm not going to be home when the form letter arrives giving my son's ship and division. Can anyone tell me what the envelope looks so that I can have someone look for it in my mail for me? Also, I'm so worried I'm going to miss "the box." How long does it usually take for it to arrive?

It's been two years since my son left for boot camp. I remember not wanting to miss any chance of. communication. The box took about ten days and arrives by Fed Ex. While exciting to receive something its a little sad to see their stuff without anything in the way of how they are doing. The envelope is a white #10 envelope and will be addressed by your sailor if I remember correctly. Once you get your sailors address start writing. My sailor said the letter really helped. Just know it does get easier :)

I agree with Smom, Karneth. The envelope is standard, legal-sized. My son had addressed it very neatly in block letters with his name and address in the upper left-hand corner. It was a form letter with blanks where my son filled in the information applicable to him, such as his Ship and Division as well as his PIR date. I got in the letter in approximately 10 - 12 days after he left. His box arrived within about 7 days. It was really sad to get all his clothes - it made everything seem so final, that he was really gone for a long time.

Thank you

"The box" arrives by FedEx within a few days to a week (sometimes up to 10 days, but rarely that long) after arrival. The form letter arrives in the regular mail by USPS an average of 10 days after arrival; it can be sooner or up to 3 weeks, but most have them within 2 weeks of arrival. See Arrival and What Happens at the RTC and the info on the main page of this group for more info.

Than you

You are very welcome.

I don't know what your son's handwriting is like, but I will tell you that I thought someone else sent the letter, the writing was so neat!!  The Fed Ex box will require a signature.  There is a form you can get online to give them permission to leave it, if you are comfortable doing that.  They attempted to deliver mine, and I filled out a form online, but at that point, I had the package information.  Hope this helps!

You can go to www.fedex.com/us/delivery and set up the delivery options for "the box".

Thank you

Thank you

Thanks everyone. I have a plan now for the letter and box.

Is the box always sent by FEDEX?  We have a P.O. Box, but FEDEX delivers to the street address.  Just want to make sure so my son writes the right address down.
