My soon to be husband who's now an E-4 and is going to be starting power school in a month or two he is assigned to subs and we plan on being in Goosecreek for a year or two, God wiling, we are getting married in 3 weeks and I'm trying to organize final details of the move but a have a few final questions from Kansas.

should i change my name, drivers license, insurance in our home state or should I wait until Im at GC

I know that we stay in a hotel for a couple days if our house is not ready for us but will we be compensated  for that cost ?

When I get there what questions do I need to be asking about benefits, Tricare, and his LES to ensure I can be confident in what decisions we have to make considering I have ZERO military experience

I know they have resources for spouses to find jobs and go to school... but where is it?/ what do I need to do?

homes on base are 2/3 bedroom with typically 2 bath but what are they like? nice? duplex? regular homes? any backyard? if so is the yard fenced?

What connection groups are there for wives?

We most definitely appreciate any answers or tips we can get and look forward to being there soon :)

My son just started Power School the beginning of July, got married June 8th and they live on base. They are duplex and I think you can fence in your own yard at your own expense. I did see some that had fenced in yards. They all have carports and a screened in porch on the side. My son and wife ended up with a 3 bedroom as that was all that was available. They are dated but still nice with lots of space. Neither one has changed their drivers license and can in fact leave them for now. They can leave their state of residence as Ohio (hometown).

I have no idea about their insurance, but do know that had TONS to do the first week back, getting her id, etc. They were in their housing by Wens after arriving back in GC on Monday.

I know there are resources on base for them, support groups, etc.

Hope that helps! I would be happy to introduce you to my new DIL there.

My understanding is that you would be wise to get your dependent military ID as soon as possible after you are married - before you even get there if you are getting married before you get there.

It is actually very advantageous not to change your drivers license and car registration to SC.  SC is one of the few states to exempt military from taxes that are not required to be exempted by federal law - but only if you are out of state stationed in SC.  Income tax is a different issue - my son came from a state without a state income tax - so it was a no brainer to not change his state of residence to SC - which has one for military members who have SC as their state of residence on their military records.

BTW you can have your car insurance in SC and your car registered in another state - USAA is the insurance company used by most military members - they specialize in insurance only for military members and their family members ( former military as well ).

My son lived in a three bedroom PPV ( base housing ) and it was more than adequate - all the utilities are included in rent - and it is very, very close to Power School and Proto-type at Goose Creek - which is invaluable.  Rent payment was by payroll deduction - and I believe there was no significant deposit  - but they did have to put the first month's rent on a credit card until the payroll deduction caught up.

Just currious how he knows he is assigned to subs.

Unless something has changed in the last six months, you can volunteer for subs even before you join ( or in Boot Camp, or A-School, or Power School I believe ) , but they decide where you are actually going to be assigned ( Carrier or Sub ) in the last few months of Prototype.  My son found out just two weeks before photo-type graduation.

Of course if they do not volunteer for sub at some point in the Nuke training pipeline - they will go to a Carrier.

A rule of thumb is navy needs are 50% Carrier and 50% Sub, but in my son's graduating proto-type class over 90% volunteered for subs, so a substantial minority of the sub volunteers ended up on carriers.

Wow thanks for the information everyone! I feel more secure now. LOL

I will have to look into the session classes because there is an overwhelming amount of info to learn.

The tax exempts would be very helpful so i'll have to look into those Kansas has state and income tax for military personal but there might be an exemption if we don't live here.

We already use USAA for our vehicles so i think we are going to stick with it.

As far as subs its not official or anything. I miss spoke. I don't understand the process and i'm still learning. However I know he is a nuke mm student and wants to work on subs.

I'm most definitely am interested in meeting as many people as possible. :)
