My son leaves for boot camp right now on October 30th, 2013.  He has signed papers to request an earlier ship date.  I guess I misunderstood, I thought nuke sailors all went to boot camp together on certain dates to correspond with A school.  There is another nuke sailor in DEP that leaves August 28th, and this is the date I guess we thought he would be going earlier at.  Does this mean he can really go at any time, with very little notice?  I'm sorry if I am not clear, or if this is a really stupid question.  This is my first time with all this, my oldest child, am trying not to be "that" mom, just have so many questions.

everything is based on the needs of the navy. nukes leave at all times of the year and are integrated into the basic units

The date could change or not.  But going in as Nuke doesn't make any difference.  BC is for all the sailors, they split up from there. When they get to SC they will do indoc first, they class up when there is enough of them.  I've known some to spend only 3 or 4 days in indoc then class up, and my sailor was in indoc over 2 weeks.  And there are no stupid questions, we've all been there.  But first and foremost, be ready for date changes and delays. I've experienced big delays, my son was delayed in prototype 3 times, because of breakdowns, so his ending date was much later than originally expected.  Also, he had an O.K.'d leave, cancelled at the last minute.  So keep that in mind when making any reservations.  Always pay extra for refundable tickets and be able to cancel hotels at the last minute.

ditto everything there. nuke training is based strictly on the ups and downs of the reactors in prototype. and they go down every 5 minutes or so!

My son passed all the tests and got nuclear placement in January.   He graduated in June.  I guess now I am more nervous, knowing that after August 15th (which he requested) it could be any time.

My son was told he would be leaving next Feb when he signed in June, then a week later they called and said he would be going Aug. 6,  so I really think things can change at any time.  I too am new at this.

The recruiter told us that sometimes recruits are delayed with leaving because of personal issues or illness and their slot will be offered to other Deppers that have signed papers to leave earlier to go to Great Lakes. Sometimes it can be pretty short notice, such as a week. Incidentally, a lot of nukes fill out the papers because the DEP is typically longer for them. If he gets a call with an offer for an earlier date, he will need to be prepared to accept the date at the time he receives the offer, because the same offer may be given to several people. I've heard of instances in which a Depper told the recruiter that he wanted to check with his family and when he called the recruiter back to accept, the slot had been given to someone else.

they should tell him.mine went to nuke right after bc.we went to great lakes and saw him graduate and then he flew to sc.

Anyone have a sailor in class 1327?
