My son is going to Groton, Conn. for submarine training after boot camp.  I was wondering if there was anyone else out there that had someone going to sub school.

I do!!

Oh good!  Thanks for answering OklahomaMama and hal01090.  I haven't heard any discussions about kids going to sub school.  What are your kids/friend's boyfriend going to do in subs?  Any idea about how soon they will go to Groton after they graduate from BC?

My son went to Groton 2 years ago for sub school; he is stationed there now. After graduation he left the next morning for Groton.

Thanks.  I'm trying to figure out if we should plan to stay there for a couple of days after graduation or not.  Guess I had better get used to everything being up in the air. Bet my son won't even know anything until the day before it is supposed to happen.  Thanks for the info though.

I forgot to ask...are there any breaks in between school for visits or can they leave for the holidays?

My son is going to be SECF. Submarine computers and electronics field. I've heard they can leave as soon as the day after PIR. In his last letter he said he should know soon what day he leaves.

That is what my son is going to be doing.  It definitely must be an awesome position then. ha ha  My son left for boot camp on June 17th.  If your getting letters from your son, then I'm guessing your son is getting ready to graduate. Congratulations!  Maybe if we can keep in contact in this group, you can let me know what your son says about sub school.

Mine is going to Groton as well. And if anyone wants to know about the area, it is my home town, I was born on the Sub Base (about 100 years ago).

My SR said it looked like those going to sub school in his group would be cooling their heels in GL for about a month, pulling duty and such. That may have changed, it was several weeks ago when he shared this with us. Ship 11 Div 279, TG 38

I would love to pick your brain about the area!!  I was just asking navymomtrustinggod about visition during sub school or if they get any long breaks other than the holidays.  Are there some good hotel/motels in the area? What else if there to do sight seeing wise there?

Mine has PIR on August 16. I can't wait!!! We should stay in touch. Any info I get regarding when he will leave I'll let you know. Hopefully he will know soon. :)

That would be great!!

If you have come to this discussion, you may want to join or at least check out Sub Moms and GROTON, CT. SUBSCHOOL & "A" SCHOOL MOMS and  check out Naval Submarine Base New London Facebook Page. Your Sailor will most likely fly out to "A" School the day after PIR. See PIR Day and Liberty During PIR Weekend to help you know how to plan your weekend.

There are groups for some of the ratings as well and I can steer you to those and also the Rating Information Card.
