Transporting a car to my son at Goose Creek
Does anyone have previous experience with getting a car to their sailor while at Nuke school in Goose Creek? Our son is in his 3rd week of Power School and he had us look for a car for him in our home state of Kansas. He has signed all of the papers and I have a transport company lined up (friend) to take it to him. Can a transport truck get on the base to deliver it? We are going to shoot for Labor Day weekend as there is no way he can be pulled out of class to sign for the car. He also cannot receive phone calls as they are not allowed to have their phones in class with them. I want this to be as easy as possible as my son is under alot of stress with the program itself. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Last year, My wife drove my Son's pickup out to him. Although the base itself is "no entry", to the west of the base is the mini-nex (on fletcher road) which is not blocked off. It has a parking lot which could be possibly be used for the car transfer. I'm not sure about a transport truck, though. My wife drove the pickup out there, and then my son gave her a ride to the airport to fly back home. (after spending a couple of days with her, of course!)
What "phase" is he in? If he's not "phase 3", it might be more difficult.

When we took our son's car down to GC for him, (we live in NC, about 4 hours away), we made arrangements to meet him at the Mini-Nex (address is 1945 Fletcher Street, Goose Creek, SC 29445 for the GPS). There's a nice big parking lot right there across from some tennis courts, and it's along those tennis courts that the sailors walk to come off the base to go to the Mini-Nex.
I think if you have the day of arrival, then the transport can call or text to give an ETA based on their GPS info (assuming they're using GPS - which I would HIGHLY recommend, since South Carolina apparently doesn't believe much in road signs! LOL). Then your sailor can meet them at the parking lot to sign for his car.
I would recommend shooting for late Friday afternoon (after 4pm is when liberty starts), or Saturday (when they have liberty all day). They don't have liberty on Sunday, and they may not have liberty on Labor Day. Actually, now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure they DON'T have liberty on Labor Day - it's a regular class day for them.

As a federal holiday, Labor Day is a day of liberty just as every other federal holiday is, as long as they don't have duty or are working the rotating shifts of prototype.

Hi Tiggertime - our son is also in his 3rd week of Power school and he just contacted us on Sunday and said he is finally ready for us to ship his car to him. There are a couple of other discussions in this group regarding car transport but mainly it is to find a reputable company. Sounds like you are lucky to have someone transport for you......I'm still trying to figure out who to use from California but I have some referrals from other moms that I am checking in to. Our son said to see if we could get it delivered on the weekend so he's not in class, but I don't think it's that easy! And trying to do it after class hours isn't that simple either. ugh! From my research I find that some say you can have it dropped and there doesn't need to be anyone there to sign for it....not 100% sure how that works yet but that might be an idea.
It's not a problem delivering on base because most of the base is not inside a gate. They could meet by the McDonalds or even on a residential street in the base housing. I am told there is a car repair place behind the dive and the mini-nex too that perhaps it could be dropped at.
If I find out more info I will pass it on to you....

I personally would have them drop it at the mini nex. There is a post office inside that could possibly be used to hold the keys if necessary. Its a large parking lot that sits between the bowling alley and the mini nex. If I remember correctly, the road goes back into the housing area and that is not an off limits area---that in itself might not be a bad idea. If he has a married class member, a spouse might be willing to go and sign for the car at any time during a day when it would arrive. Bink frequently had classmates who had such things taken care of by his married classmates. They all live on base and housing is right behind the classified area. Hope that helps.

I sent a car down to my son. It was quite easy. Although the transport is not allowed on base, we set up the delivery for later in the day when my son was out of class. The transport company sent a text to my son to say they were 20 min. away. My son was given permission to go meet them. It went very smoothly. The first thing he did was to invite all his buddies to Walmart.(LOL)

Can you tell me which company you used? I am finding that most of them can't guarantee delivery later in the day or on a Saturday. We are re thinking the whole thing and my husband may end up driving the car to him and then fly home. I know they can't have their phones in class and I am worried about someone else having to sign for his car and hold the keys for him. Thank you.

Kansas City? We live in the St Louis area and it's a great trip to SC. You should just drive the car yourself and have a great time in Charleston. Many things to do there and the weather is great. Our son's in San Diego now and we wish he was back in SC.

My husband may drive the car himself. I cannot make the trip as I work for a school district and we are getting ready to start back to school on August 12th. We are both worried about the car being delivered to our son at a time when he is out of school and can sign for it. My husband would fly home after spending a few days there.

We waited until my son got settled in South Carolina then transported his truck on a trailer to him.it cost close to 600.00 to get it to him..but it was worth it..he got to ride back to texas with us..but any way we kept it registered here..which is legal since this is actual home. He maintained insurance and anything else it needed up there in his name..but if i remember right there was some thing about him not being able to have it..before graduation. but not sure at all. he may not have wanted it until he got everything together..money wise..Good luck God Bless
