My son leaves for BC on August 7, 2013 and I am unsure of what to do about our auto insurance coverage. He has a vehicle which we will switch to "in storage" or "pleasure vehicle" but do I keep him on our insurance policy? If not, will he be able to get insurance again when he needs it in the future? Will he need it at BC or after that at school in Pensacola? Thanks for the input!

This is a great question. We don't have our son on our insurance anymore either (as a driver) but when he comes home for leave, he still drives our cars. I believe that the car is the insured, not the person. So anyone to drive our cars would be covered. He doesn't have his own car. We leased him when he was home, now it just sits :) But lease is up in May 2014
Check with your insurance company about the options. I removed my now Sailor from my policy when he went to BC and he has been able to drive when he is home on leave. He now has his own car with his own insurance policy with GEICO and the lapse in insurance was not an issue since he is in the military. I was advised that if either of my adult children were to be driving my car for 30 consecutive days or more that I would need to put them on the policy for that time, but otherwise, the car is covered if I give them permission to drive.
You are very welcome.
My daughter leaves on August 7th as well. She will also be attending "A" school in Pensacola. What field is your son going into?
Hi. My son will be going to Rescue Swimmer school in Pensacola after BC. Tonight will be his last night at home and then the hotel tomorrow and off to Great Lakes on Wednesday. Time sure has flown by these past few weeks! Hope you have a great time with your daughter before she takes off on Wednesday. Maybe the will have the same PIR date. I am hoping for Oct 4 but I guess I'll have to be patient and see what comes. Take care and stay in touch!
I'm insured through the hartford insurance and I have a son who drives our car when he's back home from school, so yes, I would advise you to keep him on your policy. You should speak to your insurance agency and let them know of the turn of events and they'll be able to guide you best about what to do depending on how often you plan on using the car.
