I am new to this site and so happy I found it!  My son leaves for GL on July 29th and I have mixed emotions but I am so proud of him.  Just looking for other moms/family going through the same thing.  It is always nice to know you are not alone!

I hope you get the call soon!  It's scripted and he'll probably sound like a robot, but at least that robot is your son, and he's calling you!

Here's a video of our sailor being Sworn In.

Great video!!!  :)

Thanks!  We took a lot of video that day, because the night before, my husband realized he missed our Sailor's voice!  Problem solved!

My son's girlfriend posted his swearing in on FB, but an army mom told her she wasn't allowed. I would think it's ok, what do you think?

Did the Army mom say why?

When we were at our Sailor's Swearing In, the Officer in Charge (Army Captain) encouraged picture-taking and video-taking during the ceremony.

It seemed like the army mom thought it was ok to take video but not to post in on FB. I only took regular photos and  his girlfriend has the video. She took it down after that army mom said that and is scared to have it up. I don't want to push her to do what she's not comfortable with, but it's a nice video. If it were mine, I'd just put it back up. But like I said, I don't want to be pushy....she's only 18 yrs old and not as bold as we mommies are LOL.

Hope you got the call from your son.  Em called us a couple hours ago, and she did sound like a robot!  Scared me at first, but after reading the posts, I guess they all sound like that.

Yes most of them do and that is what I had expected as well, but for some reason that was the best my son sounded all day - I am assuming becasue he probably got some rest on the plane?  He said "Hi Mom!  I have to read something to you from a paper so here it goes..."  lol :)  He just read it like it was normal conversation and he was just telling me stuff.  Then we were able to say our I love you's and I felt a lot better by hearing his voice.  He sounded happy and I think he was just relieved to finally be there.  So all of us have received our calls now and it is on to the difficult part of not hearing from them for a while and waiting for their boxes and our letters to arrive.  Please keep us all updated when anyone receives anything so we can all have an idea of what to expect!!  :)

My daughter left on July 29th and today we received the BOX.  We live in Vegas.  Hang in there, I am sure it's own its way.

I only got the call when the plane landed - I haven't gotten that official call when he got to the base. The plane was delayed 4 hrs, so he didn't get to Chicago till 1:30 a.m.  Do they do processing in the middle of the night? I wouldn't think he got to the base till 3 a.m.

Do you think with all these delays, he won't even get to make that first call? aaaacckk!!!

Gosh, he must be exhausted!  I hope you get "the call" real soon!
