Great Lakes, IL.

Great Lakes, IL is the home of the Navy's only boot camp at this time, so all recruits train there now.

Hi, I saw on the comment wall that you said do not send letters until you receive the form letter, why is that?  Another mom just got the address and I told her about your comment below but I didn't know the reason.

I also just got my sons Ship, DIV and PIR date but I don't want to send a letter if he will get in trouble.

The first reason not to send letters until receiving the form letter is that the PAO at the4 RTC asks that loved ones wait on the form letter.

The second reason is that sometimes the recruiter gets the address wrong and that causes someone in the mail room to have to look up the correct info or return the letter/s. Letters with the wrong address can be delayed several weeks because they are not a top priority for those in the mail room.

The third reason to wait is because recruits do not receive mail much faster, if at all, if the loved ones wait than if they mail letters before receiving the form letter because they do not receive mail until they are in their permanent ship and a Recruit Mail Petty Officer has been trained. The first Mail Call is on 1-3 or 1-4 DOT. The form letters go out on P-4 or so and so that usually gives time to get a letter to the recruit before the first Mail Call.

Thank you so much for explaining.  I had planned on waiting but I was told some moms were writing and I felt bad that some would receive letters before the rest.  My sons recruiter also told me not to wait which is why I was so confused!

Yes, it is very confusing when the recruiters give info that goes against what is put out by the RTC. They should be supporting info from the RTC, but it appears that any don't even bother reading the things from the RTC.

my daughter leaves to BC on August 21st from Florida . Sonar Tech.(Christina)

My hubby leaves the 21st! We are from Las Vegas.

Good luck to your hubby, where is he going to bootcamp at?

My sailor recruit son taking his oath today at Ft. Lee, Virginia. He is now on his way to RTC.  What a tender emotional day this has been.  From excitement to sorrow and back again.

Nice pic of your Seaman Recruit.

Thank you!
