Hi I'm a wife.. Well I have a few questions:
1.My sailor and I just got married and he just got to his first duty station. We are aware that the Navy will not pay for our children and me to move to San Diego. So I wanted to know if any of you have any tips on how we can prepare ourselves financially for the move without Navy help, also how are we suppose to start this whole process of getting into a place in San Diego
2.I currently live in Texas and my sailor signed POA so that I can enroll myself into deers because when he took all of my stuff with him to San Diego they said that they needed my actual photo ID smh... Anywho I contacted the base here in Texas where I am located and I was told that I have to set up a appointment to do the enrollment and to get the ID card and the soonest available appointment will be Sept. 17 is that right like omg that is a whole month from now
Sorry my post was long I still have more but I'll wait lol

FSA is $248 a month and kicks in after 30 days.
No real extra pay for dependents. You will see BAS sometimes, which is a food allowance for him when he is living at home and not eating meals at the chow hall. BAS is NEVER for the dependents. If he deploys, you'll lose that money while he's gone, so never use it as "base income" in your budget. As extra income, the best thing to do is actually use it for his food, and put the rest into a bit of savings. Easier said than done, I know!
2. They really can't get you in until the 17th?! My husband and I walked right into the DEERS office without an appointment and walked out 10-15 minutes later with everything done. I would call again because there's no way that's right! Try asking if they allow walk-ins.
Save as much money as you can for the move...we moved from Michigan to Washington and spent nearly $500 in gas alone.
I'm sorry, I don't! :\ We packed as much stuff as possible into one car and drove the 2500 miles out to his duty station. His parents have a gigantic trailer and they brought the rest of our stuff out a few weeks later. It was way cheaper than using a company. I couldn't find anything -like UHaul or Upack- that was cheaper than 2-3000. Good luck!!!
Get a rental truck which can tow your car. It may be a long drive, but it can be done. Professional movers are very expensive. Another way to go is the POD systems, where they deliver the pods, you get friends and family to help you pack them up, and the shippers move them.
In the meantime, go through everything you own and decide what can be sold, donated or tossed. Every item means money out of your pocket to transport it.
My sailor is at A school right now in Pcola and before he left for basic we lived in a huge two bedroom apartment in Savannah and i packed all of our stuff into the largest POD and still had a ton of room. The best thing about the PODs is that when you move its already packed and they move it for you also if you are a AAA member they give discounts as well as military discounts. And when I check to see how much it would be for them to move the POD from Savannah to Ohio it was like 500 which it costs me 300 for gas alone for my car but when I checked UHaul it was like 1500 for the truck and trailer to go one way and that doesn't even include the gas for the truck.
