Just came back from an unbelievable weekend with my son following PIR and wanted to share a few tips.  Because he didn't have to travel to A school we were able to spend the weekend with him.  Thanks to a tip I read here weeks ago, I booked a room at the Navy Gateway Lodge which is right on base.  It was actually only a parking lot between his ship and our lodge.  A short walk to pick him up.  He could go between us and his new ship to unpack as he wanted.  No driving and waiting at gate.  A nice restaurant right next door.  We were able to move around the base and become a little familiar with his new surroundings (like the Navy exchange where we bought all the things he now needed) We booked a suite with kitchenette for 55.00 a night.  Very clean and comfortable.  Also, if you are staying for the weekend and want to leave base but not hit up the concrete jungle of a shopping plaza, check out Libertyville, quick ten minute ride.  Nice downtown for window shopping with some really nice eateries!  My son is there through February and I am hoping to do the trip one more time.  You will need to fill out a form via email to pass security clearance to stay on base.  Very worth it if you are there for the weekend.  Enjoy your visit.

ProudMomtoKelly, since your SR shipped on Wednesday, PIR is most likely 10/04/2013, but could also be 10/11/2013. It all depends on when his division formed. Yes, you'll just have to wait on the form letter.

Also, you mean rating (job/specialty), not rate (pay grade). After "A" School, it is fine to speak of rate because that will be the rating and rate together (HTSR, for example), but most don't ask it that way.

Thanks for the info.  We are staying Labor Day weekend.  What isthe form you are talking about to stay on base.  We haven't heard anything about that

hi my son will be attending PIR in October,  I was told if I want to get to PIR early not to drive because they do a car inspection, which can be quite timely. The  Navy Gateway Lodge sounds like it would be PERFECT for what I'm looking for..  thank you

Inspections are random. Drive if you want.

(Check your My Page.)

hours many people fit in a suite
The suite has a bedroom with queen bed and a living room with full size sleep sofa. A cot is also available in the laundry room. The kitchenette has full fridge great for storing much missed favorite snacks!

I am so excited to see my son this Friday, August 23, at PIR!! My family is flying into Milwaukee from Oklahoma City and staying across the street from Base, hope that's not a hassle going in and out of the gate. We only get a few hours with our son, he leaves for A School early the next morning so we want to spend as much time as possible with him!! How long was graduation?

Join the group, PIR 08/23/2013 TG 41 - 11 Divisions (311-320 and 941), to connect with others with loved ones training with your SR.  You may also want to join, or at least check out, Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones). There will be a lot of great information and support for you in those groups as well as in the PIR group. Be sure to check out the Pages (found under the pictures of the Members) and Discussions within the groups. PIR Day and Liberty During PIR Weekend will give you the info on PIR, but you will also want to check out the other Pages. You will have from about 10:30 when Liberty is called until sometime that evening.

Hello my son's PIR is 10/11 he's ship 04 div 380, My husband and I are arriving at Chicago OHare on Thursday eve and we need to be back to the airport for a 6PM flight Friday (11th).  I'm so upset to learn we may only get to be with our sailor for approx. 30 minutes.  If he is whisked away to A school (his new ship) it does not sound like we will have any time with him :(  Can you help? Where would be the best place for us to stay so we may get an opportunity to see him after graduation?  I'm trying to be brave here....sniff sniff.

There are no groups for just loved ones of Electrician's Mate (EM), but you may find some in Engineers, Snipe Moms, and Snipe Moms(enginers). You will also want to join Great Lakes A School Q&A and GL A-school moms. You can also check out the Training Support Center (TSC) Great Lakes Facebook Page. The Rating Information Card for EM can be found at https://www.cool.navy.mil/enlisted/rating_info_cards/em.pdf. See PIR Day and Liberty During PIR Weekend within Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) to know about his Liberty on the day of PIR. I'm sorry you are unable to stay through the weekend since you would have been able to spend time with him each day of the weekend.

I  invite you to join Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) and to check out the Pages (found under the pictures of the Members) there. The Page, Saving Money PIR Weekend, will have info for you on hotels.

My son informed us that he'll be staying for A school for ten weeks.

Yes, those with a contract for OS have "A" School in GL for about 10 weeks after classing up.
