OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

Simply Appalling!!
I just received a very unexpected call from my son! He is being medically discharged from the Navy! My mind is racing with anger and sadness. Angry because I don't understand how this can be after all my son has given to the Navy and all the Navy has taken from him.
My son graduated from bootcamp on 6-7-2013 and was suppose to leave for A-school, but for medical reasons went to THU. Apparently, they discovered something on an xray taken during his physical, but decided not to tell him until he completed bootcamp!! Two weeks later, while in THU, they tell him they are going to do a biopsy. He has the biopsy (BTW...this is the 1st time my son has ever been sedated). FOUR weeks later and only after he ask...they tell him the biopsy was inconclusive and they will have to schedule a second biopsy! They also inform him that if the next biopsy comes back inconclusive they will have to "crack" his chest open to do further testing!!!!! Who tells a 23 year old this??? The answer: the US Navy!
So with no other option and still having a strong desire to serve, he undergos the 2nd biopsy. Meanwhile since day 1 of THU, my son has done everything the Navy has ask of him. To the point where leadership was telling him he would get "letters of recomendation". The 2nd biopsy was conducted last week and due to "complications" my son spent the night in ICU!! YES....ICU!!! After talking to the attending physician at the Federal Hospital, we were assured that our son would be ok and the doctor said he would contact my son with the results as soon as he got them (unlike the 1st biopsy that took 4 weeks). Just as promised, the doctor contacted my son yesterday with the news that he was going to release himso he could attend A-School. My son was so excited and went immediately to Tranquility to speak to the base doctor about next steps needed for his orders. Well.....he met today with the base doctor who informed him he was going to be medically discharged!!! What the heck happened?
Now my son is being stripped of everything and sent upstairs to the separation unit where he will be held "hostage" until all paperwork is completed. No more phone and no more privileges. He is being tossed aside by the same Navy that once valued him....just like that with the snap of a finger.
My heart is filled with sadness as I try to make sense of this and wonder with every minute that goes by how my son is dealing with this rejection by that one entity he so willing served.

I am so sorry your son and your family are going through all this...my heart just aches for you. But I understand your frustration...my son too was medically discharged a little over a year ago for a eye condition he might develop later in life, one he does not currently have....our son was devastated just as yours is....know that your son has the right to appeal...most do not win their appeals, ours did not....and they will promise and tell your son anything and everything to get him to leave quietly....what you must focus on now is your son and his well being...both physically and mentally...he's hurting and confused...make sure he knows how much love is waiting for him at home and support. Unfortunately this was not meant to be....it's not what he'll want to hear but in time things should get easier....
Bottom line is the recruiters are over recruiting and with the cut backs...anyone can become an odd man out...
I will pray for your son, give him our thanks for his selfless intentions on trying to serve our country...take care!!! -

Thank you for your kind words and advice. I am reading some horror stories about SEPS and the long waiting process on Ship 5. If they choose to appeal do you know if the separation process is longer? If so, how much longer? I am so worried about him...i just want to pick him up and bring him home.

Next time you talk to your son, ask him to tell them he wants copies of all of the medical paper work and the xrays. They are the military's so they don't just give them to him.

Aside from an appeal, are there other reasons why we would want copies of the medical paper work and xrays?

So you have them in case another doctor at home wants to see them. Also it is always good to keep copies of ones medical paper work in case something comes up in the future they have them. As if he is separated and needs a copy of those latter in life, it will be next to impossible to get a copy. Best to just get them know while he is there.

I am sorry for your issues. I am still waiting for my son to come home and I am so beside myself. He has been in SEPS for 23 days and no date yet as to when he is coming home. When I get to talk to him, he has made himself physically ill, he is not sleeping and needless to say his mental state and self esteem are in the toilet. I never dreamed that something that we were so excited about has come down to this nightmare.
Hang in there, all I can do now is just pray. -

CodyShip12DIV325, I'm curious....did your son tell them he wanted to appeal?
I know this is strange, but I find consolation in that I am convinced this is our government's fault for allowing this to happen. Kind of scary!?!? Anyway, I am going to fight this battle for my son, from outside RTC, by writing to our state congressman, the president and to anyone and everyone tell my son is sent home. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

When you talk to your loved one next, ask him what he wants. If he doesn't want to appeal...you writing anyone will do nothing except maybe get him home sooner

Angie- my son does not want to appeal. We want him home as quickly as possible. After reading more discussion threads, I do have a few questions regarding my son and his separation. As stated in an early posting, by son graduated with his division on 6-7-2013. So, he not a recruit. However, he never left Great Lakes for A-School. Instead he has spend the entire time in THU and just found out yesterday that he will be medically discharged. My questions are......Since he is not a recruit, will his separation be handled differently? Will he be able to keep his phone while in separation process? Will he be moved upstairs from THU to Ship 5 with recruits that are separating from boot camp? Thank you so much for your quick responses.

Sorry to say he is still on the RTC base so he will be treated the same as if he was separated before he PIR.

My son does not wish to appeal. He has been put through HEL_ and he wishes not to be put through any more. He just wishes to come home. He needs to find a job and get on with his life and they are holding him "like a prisoner". Doesn't seem fair. I had already lost my trust in the legal system and government and this just seals the coffin for me on my anger and disgust with them.
I wouldn't waste your time and breath on complaining to the government. They seem to just not care and the don't give a darn about us or anyone but themselves.Such a shame.
