My son's recruiter is out of Peekskill, but the two offices may have the same Chief.  I am not sure if the boys know each other, but if they don't now, they will soon enough.  My older son (now 20 y/o) went through Air Force Boot Camp 2 years ago and it seems that they are not similar at all.  This will be a different experience than the last time for me, I guess that is good because it is with a different kid...lol.    My son has had 4 different recruiters because they had all seemed to be at the end of their assignment and then shipped out.  I haven't even met the current recruiter.  His first two were very good.

I don't think they mentioned a financial plan to my son or any outstanding issues.

We took our son to the Hotel in Albany last night and went out for dinner,  There is a place called      The Albany Pumpstation

19 Quackenbush Square Albany, NY 12207

                 Phone  518 447 9000

It is only 5 min driving from the hotel.....The prices are good and the food was out of this world!!!

Oh Boy - today is the 30 day mark.  My stomach is starting to really hurt & sleep is out of the question.  He seems so nonchalant about it all.  "No big deal Mom".  He will meet with the recruiter today to talk about the arrangements he has made for bill paying etc while he is away.  Was trying to plan a going away party with the family, but he appears to be pretty booked up between now & Oct 3.  Looks like it will be cake & ice cream instead of a formal party..... Everytime we try to get him to do things like sort out his belongings, clean his stuff up in the garage or anything that has to do with leaving, he quickly finds other things to do.  Not saying he is having 2nd thoughts, just worried that he is having a little avoidance issue.  This is HARD stuff :(

My son also has avoidance issues.  My son is thinking of doing a fulltime career of the Navy.  It is weird, when my older son went to boot camp/then school (USAF) I knew he would be back home in 6 mo. because he is in the reserves. With my younger son, he is going to be gone full time and I am going to really miss him.  I know they have to leave the "nest" at sometime, but he is only 17 and I don't think I am ready for him to leave.  Well, I guess it is time to invest in a good vehicle so that I can plan many road trips to visit him.

@21anne

My son is also 17 (turns 18 in BC) and I'm having a hard time with him being GONE. Not like college, gone like my friends' kids . . . but GONE. For 7 years!! I was feeling pretty sorry for myself the other day when a few people commented on Facebook how they wouldn't see their kid until next weekend . . . I went off. LOL!

He hasn't been away from us for more the 13 days his whole life...

His leave date was moved up by 3 weeks, so now I am only a month away and having to change everything around to get it done. Good thing about that, is he may get to come home Christmas break. We are only 6 hours from GL.

I agree, @Bethin NY, it's really Hard.

@ momm2five

I know exactly what you mean about friends talking on FB about how they are going to miss their kid(s) at college.  They just don't get it.  It is very hard already.

That would be so great if your son can go home for Christmas.  I think he should be able to.  My son's "A" school will be in San Antonio, TX.  I am not sure if we are going to have him come home for Christmas or if we are going to go out to TX for Christmas (my sister actually lives about 20 min from the base his "A" school is at)

Oh Boy do I get the college thing momm2five - I was thinking I was just being a b*tc*, but I get REALLY annoyed about that one.  Hard to be sympathetic :(  Our boy is 21, went to Community College , so lived home.  I was trying to think & I don't remember him being away for more than 1 week - now we are looking at YEARS - ugh. Went to his last DEP mtg with him last night - it's the real deal ladies .  These young people are adults and they belong to the Navy.  For the most part, they are excited and proud.  Most of them are really looking forward to getting started with this new life they have chosen. I am just trying to "put on a happy face" as I do believe it will be an experience of a lifetime for him.  Once again - HARD stuff :(

It is hard to be sympathetic!! And these are some of my good friends!! I have a few who *get it*, but others I just want to smack!

It's starting to hit home now that we are under a month . . .

That's great he will so close to family for A school! We have very close family friends who live in Lake Geneva, WI, and I guess that's really close to GL. It will be nice knowing he can just go hang out if he gets a day of leave or something. I don't know if that ever happens, but the idea makes me happy.

It would be nice to spend Christmas in TX!!

I LOVE Lake Geneva and it is close to GL!  I think, in most cases, once they have completed certain levels in their A school and if they are doing well and have not had any problems, they should have weekends free (they still have a curfew and have to sleep at the base)

Oh my son too. Is cool as a cucumber and I'm a wreck. Not showing around him tho. I get the no sleep stomach hurts Ugghh. He too we need to just go through his room and clean stuff. I think in his mind he thinks I will just do it or he will do it later. Ha. Famous words. We did watch a video together on boot camp on this site. That seemed to get him talking to me about it. And what to bring video too. I wanted him feel somewhat confident about what might be happening and maybe not so lost. Oh and me too. It gives you an idea and eases some worries About getting off the plane. It really helped to feel a lite more connected. :). I need to find out tho about the. Meps on oct 2 leave oct 3. And I think we have to get passes to walking him to the airplane.

OK, I am trying so hard to figure out what to expect.... Some sources say the people shipping in the 1st week of Oct will PIR on Wed of Thanksgiving week (Nov 27)  Others say they will be put in a push division and PIR a week early (?Nov 22). The recruiter last night warned it may be a week later (Dec 6).  Very hard to plan. When I started to research lodging etc, I realized I really can't plan anything at all till I get the letter.  Too bad - flights are so much cheaper the earlier you book.  We honestly are thinking of driving from Albany, NY to GL - anyone else done that trip ? The biggest advantage would be having our car there, I guess.  There are only 25 full days till my son reports to MEPPS to be sworn in & 26 till he gets on that plane... Oy my stomach hurts !
