Hi Everyone.

I have found this site to be very helpful for the last 10 days.  I was so excited to find so much great information and to connect with people missing their loved ones at BC and looking forward to the times ahead.

I received a call this afternoon from my son.  He was just moved to ship 5.  He had a bad reaction to a shot and they took him to medical.  While there, he signed a release which allowed for some check of information.  Apparently it was for ADHD medication.  He was diagnosed in second grade and took medication for 2 years.  Nothing at all since them, we were not convinced that was the issue-just that they wanted him to sit still in school.  He had never been on any medication since 4th grade and had to further issues in school.  It was my understanding that anything like that under 14 years of age would not require a waiver.

They are telling him he can get a waiver and try again in 6 months, but after reading posts on this page, that doesn't seem likely.  It also doesn't appear that many appeals are ever granted.

I am not hearing good things about Ship 5 and this does concern me.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

They are still treated as recruits while in ship 5 as they are still being paid by the Navy and on the bootcamp base, so they treat them all the same.  They are feed, and have a place to sleep.  Regarding the waiver, he can try for one there if he wants, but it could take weeks or months.

Have any of you heard that your sons have seen legal? My husband was sent 9/14 and still has not talked to legal. I am worried that the shutdown will affect his process out. We have a preemie baby that needs special care and I am not sure what I can do to speed up the process we need him home sooner than I thought.

Is there anyway to private message on here?

Not sure if that was directed towards me but I added u as a friend when u accept we can message.

You can private message, but you need to be friends.

With the gov't shutdown, the kids in Ship 5 were not allowed to make calls yesterday.  They were told the NEX is closed, and that is where they go to use the phones.  Some paid for computer time to let their families know what is going on.  They said Legal is closed during the shutdown and no one is being processed out at this time.

JC's Mom: How can they do this? Are these kids just in limbo until they pass a budget?

Apparently it's the gov't and they can do anything they want.  There are currently 447 kids in SEPS waiting to be sent home-and no paperwork is being processed at this time.  Travel arrangements are made by civilians who have been furloughed.  There is also no money to be spent on tickets home.  So yes, they are just in limbo until this gets worked out.  They are being told once the gov't reopens, it will take 1-2 weeks to start up the process again.  My son has been waiting to come home since 9/14.

Oh wow. That is just all bad news. I had no idea there are so many, and why isn't there some "back-up" of the civilian workforce? It's the military even their back ups have back ups.

1-2 weeks just to get the process started again?! Your poor son. I'm not sure where mine is. He called my ex husband Saturday and said at a weigh-in they noted that he had lost a lot, and was supposed to talk to someone Monday about his weight loss, and they mentioned Ship 5. But we haven't heard anything since.

The NEX is back open today, yesterday the goverment had to give furlough letters to close to 41% of the goverment staff (all the goverment staff, not just the Navy)

Again legal was closed yesterday so that they could give furlough letters to the people who where going to be furloughed.

So is legal back open again today? Angie what do you think I should do as I said we have a premature newborn she is 7weeks old but only 6llbs and needs special care. I thought I had care lined up for her but it is falling through. I am so worried I can't take care of my daugther alone.
