It was Thanksgiving Day. Our son had called us and wished us Happy Thanksgiving. Telling us that he was in Mobile, AL with a friend for Thanksgiving, when actually, he was only 4 miles away staying at his high school classmates for the night. He asked us what time we were leaving for my sister's and brother-in-law that morning. We asked him what the temp was in Mobile. He said he didn't know that he hadn't been outside yet. While we had left, our son was dropped off at home. Hid around the garage to make sure we had left. Went inside the house to cleanup and put his blues on. Then, left in his car for his aunt and uncle's.

Our family had gathered in the dining room holding hands as we always do for prayer before the feast. Our son, had driven in the driveway and noticed that no one had seen him drive in because no one came running out. My brother-in-law, had just finished prayer and said "Amen". At that very moment, the door opened up behind my husband, daughter, and me. Everyone had gasped, and my mother went running! We turned around to see our son walk in the door!!!! It was a very touching moment! And no one knew of his coming home! Only two of his high school classmates who were getting married the same day! Our daughter, had just visited him three weeks earlier, and didn't even know. My husband, whom I never see him emotional, was touched as all of us! It was such a WONDERFUL surprise! And the timing walking in the door was AMAZING!!! God knew!!

OMG -- if that story doesn't make you tear up, nothing will!  What a memory!

It sure is a memory! And I did give him extra hugs! He took them all! I was so excited that night I couldn't get to sleep right away. When he left and that evening when our daughter left, I felt the let down. But the time we had made it easier to get over it.

Aw Bev - that is so sweet!  Brought tears to my eyes too - so very thoughtful of your son to surprise you like this - give that boy extra hugs ;-)

Awww, you made my tear ducts leak.  I kept hoping with each one of my other children as they walked in the door that there might be a sailor boy hiding behind one of them to surprise us - but there wasn't....I just felt out of sorts all day long even though my other children were there.  At the close of the day I did not hear from my sailor and I was missing him terribly.

Hang in there! I kept hoping too! And the will come! Your feeling like I was last year when he wasn't here. He was at boot and graduate right after Christmas. Thanksgiving and Christmas were the first time we didn't have all our family together. Our daughter, is very close to him. They talk a lot. And it was hard for her too! When they do surprise you it will be when you least expect it! I don't see my husband emotional but he really did show it that day!

Well you made me tear up here too! Nothing better than those moments!

Amen to that!!

BevHawkeye that was such a sweet story. Your son is so special to surprise you like that.  Even though it is not a surprise I am soooo looking forward to seeing my son on Dec. 20th.

Nothing like having them around anytime, but for Christmas, it's all I need to have him here! Our family is complete then! It is a present to me having him for the holidays and that is all I want for Christmas!!

Merry Christmas! Enjoy the time you have with him!!!

It is wonderful to get them home. A surprise trip makes it so much more special.

Last year my son did it to me on Christmas Eve in Church.  The Pastor was in on it.  The congregation wound up clapping and cheering. People actually cried. We were hit by Super Storm Sandy and spirits were really low.  It was just what we all needed.  Of course. I was crying  and holding on to my son for dear life.  He was laughing and telling me it was okay.  He was home for awhile.  I don't think I heard a word of the sermon.

After the service people gathered round my son. They treated him like a celebrity.  Of course he ate it up.

I am so happy for the wonderful "surprise" you received.

I remember reading this story last year! If I remember right, you were sitting there listening to the sermon when your Pastor said something and you turned around to see your son with flowers!! Ever since reading this story, I had wondered if our son would surprise us too! And he sure did! But what a wonderful surprise for you too! I've thought of your story from time to time and hoped for a surprise!!

God Bless You!!
