We have a mission to "ZAP" some new energy into the "ZAPPERS"!

This group of sailors is in need of some serious tender loving care that only we could provide!  They are half way through a ten month deployment.

The "Zappers" are an airborne electronic attack squadron who fly and maintain the EA-18G Growlers, and are responsible for providing support for Navy, Marine, Army, Air Force and Coalition Forces.  This is one busy group and they are far from home.

The Zappers are based out of Whidbey Island, Washington and they are currently deployed with CVN75, Harry S. Truman, a Norfolk, Virginia based aircraft carrier, currently under the command of 5th Fleet.  We all know where 5th Fleet is so we know their living conditions.

There are many sailors in this group who don't receive any packages, cards or letters from home.  Some sailors have resorted to, "ordering stuff online or sending each other stuff in effort to keep the morale up".

As we prepare for the holiday season decorating, writing cards, baking cookies, let's BAKE A BATCH FOR THE ZAPPERS!

They would love to have a touch of home.  Homemade cookies, a hand written letter, a child's drawing...all of these will mean so much to this group.  The carrier isn't their real home and at times they feel like house guests who have overstayed their visit.  Let's make them feel welcomed and loved!

Here are the details;

Total sailors: 146, which is comprised of 125 males and 21 females.

Top Requested Items;

Food, (especially homemade treats, jerky and sunflower seeds)

Feminine Hygiene Products (21 females)

Pictures & Letters

Coffee and Creamer (I will ask if they have access to a coffee maker or if they are requesting single serve packets)

Deodorant, Lotion, Wipes, Tide Pods

They access to a fridge and microwave but no freezer. (so freezer pops are out)

They also have access to a DVD and CD player.

Pillowcases are a GO for the Zappers!

Let's make this adoption a wonderful way to transition to the new year

Shipping Dates  -

December 20th & 21st (or as close to that as possible)

Thank you all in advance for your help with the December adoption!

Ok we are having our first family packaging party tomorrow. We have put cookies in baggies about 50 so far. We made candy cane mice not sure how many total hopping for everyone to get one and pillow cases. I also have personal care products do these need to be bagged or can they just go in as is. I know they need to go in their own box. I have custom forms but do not remember where to get info for shipping. any help would be appreciated.  thanks for your help

PaMom, how many pillowcases are you sending? I'm keeping track on the We Stitch Love discussion of who is sending and how many.

The shipping address is in MAS We Ship Love group. If you haven't joined that group, just ask and Pat will get you added. We keep the contents hidden so the addresses aren't out there for the public to see. It gives our POC some privacy.

Laura- my son's teacher just called and is sending home all the letters and cards today from the 5th grade. She said the children really enjoyed doing them and that they will do them every month and each month add another grade so hopefully by the end of school the whole school will be doing it!  Also my daughter said she would be bringing the cookies over Thursday night so I can ship them out with the letters and cards out on Friday. Since I've never sent cookies before how should I package them?

Also I have a question- when I was speaking with the principle of our school the other night, he wanted to tell me that he was so glad that the school can be a part of this. His nephew is in the Navy. He wanted to know how they pick the group each month and wanted to know if he could give his nephews ship would it ever be possible to do them. I told him I would find out and to get me the name of his nephews ship. Well he just left a message on my voice mail and he said the ship his nephew is on is the USS TRUMAN. Is this the same ship that the Zappers are deployed with? And if so, are they separate or will they be getting this months boxes too?

Thank you Alice!  You made me realize that our contact person gave us an incomplete address.

The Zappers are a separate group on the carrier.  On a ship that large (close to 6,000 sailors) every sailor is part of a smaller group/unit.  We adopt the smaller groups when requested.

Some of the groups may contain 250-300 sailors which is still a huge group, but a manageable size.

If cookies are store bought they usually come in a pre packages plastic sleeve which is fine.  If it looks flimsy then add a gallon size zip lock bag around it.

My basic rule of thumb is to package the items as if they will be thrown down two flights of stairs.  Don't use packing peanuts or bubble wrap.  too much garbage.  Use hard candy as packing filler.

PA Mom - Best to put them in a zippy bag in case the box gets unloaded by tipping out the contents.

You have to post a photo of the candy cane mice.  I am curious!

Hello All!

I do believe our contact person for the December adoption left off an important part of the shipping address, the name of the ship.

I added it to the address!  Sorry for any confusion!

When my son's squadron was on a carrier the ombudsman told us NOT to add the name of the ship to the address. You might check with the POC to confirm.

Same with when my son was on a carrier...  they seperate the mail by the sailors assigned to the ship and those assigned to the air wing...

Hi all!

Look what Pat found.  It is our adoption group, "The Zappers"!

I will try to verify the address with our contact person.  She has been off the grid lately.  I am trying her alternate email as well.  Thank you for the heads up.
