Hi everyone,

I just thought I would start this discussion as it seems things are beginning to ramp up for a possible deployment after the first of the year sometime. I know that there are many sailors that are stationed on the Bataan and others (like my son) that will become a part of the Bataan family as a result of this deployment. I know we can't talk specifics (names/dates/etc.) but thought it would be nice to have a place to post comments and questions as we move closer to its departure.

I know I am looking forward to hearing tricks and hints on the way things work with regards to the day to day happenings on the ship. I'd like to hear from those of you who have experienced a deployment or even long term separation from your sailor like mail call, communications, liberty, what they do on their "down" time between shift, etc.

As always, thanks for all the support to NavyforMoms!

I would like to know a lot of these questions as well this will be my sons first deployment so I am unsure what to expect. He has been on the Bataan since July and seems to really enjoy it there.

How do we send boxes of goodies?

Hey Caro - there are USPS One rate boxes specifically for the military and you have to call to get them. http://www.defense.gov/News/NewsArticle.aspx?ID=24758

To order the kit, call 800-610-8734. It's free, and contains: Two Priority Mail APO/FPO Flat Rate Boxes, Two Priority Mail Medium Flat Rate Boxes, Priority Mail tape, Priority Mail address labels, & Appropriate customs forms.

Also follow the mailing rules: https://www.usps.com/send/apo-fpo-dpo.htm

Don't forget to fill out a customs form!! USPS will not deliver to the ship without it.

I'm also getting the address, so I will figure out if I can post it here or not.

Hello and welcome aboard the USS Bataan.  My son has been attached to the Bataan for the last 4 years.  He just re-enlisted for another 4.  We are all hearing the rumbles and are waiting patiently until we hear word.  If there is anything you need answered we are hear for you.

Sally

My son is leaving this morn6

Got a text this morning that he is back on land. :-) He says he really liked the experience and is looking forward to deployment. I guess we have a lot to learn about the logistics of getting care packages to them all. He was able to email me, which was a huge relief!

Sally- it sounds like you've got the information on how these things work... looking forward to your help once they do deploy. :-)

If u have a Facebook the Bataan has a page...  they post pretty much everyday!   its the USS Bataan....  got to see my sons picture recieving a Good Conduct Award... it was great to see him as I haven't seen him since June!

I love the the FB page. I check it all the time. Also, the Omsbudsman maintains the Family Support for USS Bataan Facebook page. Its a closed page for members only. So you have to identify your sailor to get on the page. There is also a YouTube channel for the Bataan.

Thanks didn't know about the family support page... waiting for confirmation on that!

HI! I looked for the Bataan FB page, but there are several and it was a bit confusing. Also, I'm not sure how to look for the Family Support page, either. Could you post a link to those pages? Thanks!

This is all kind of new for us, as my son will be on the Bataan, but he's actually a part of the squadron (not sure if there's a difference there or not), as he just spent 3 years on a sub as a sub nuke.

TIA for any fb link help!

yes, any tidbits would be helpful as my son will also be deploying in 2014....

My son is supposed to deploy soon. I am proud of him but miss him all ready. Thanks for being here ladies.
