Hi Everyone, I have a question about Tricare. I have already been enrolled in DEERS by my husband who is active duty and have gotten my dependent ID card. I was wondering if i was already enrolled in Tricare standard since I am already in the DEERS system. I have read in some places that once you are enrolled in DEERS Tricare standard is active about 30 days later, is this true? Other places have said that I need to go to Tricare with my husband to start being insured. I need to know because i have immunizations that i need to get for school and i am in the Centers for Disease Control's recommended age group for the immunizations I need.

Usually you're enrolled in TRicare the same time you are enrolled in DEERS.  No waiting period. You are probably on Tricare Standard.

You can look up your status online:

http://www.tricare.mil/

When you enroll into DEERS you are automatically put into standard you have to go usually to the hospital and go to the prime office to sign up for prime. Now depending on when you do that like say if its before the 15th of the month then Prime will go into effect the 1st of the following month if it is after the 15th of that month then it will go into effect after the following month so...for instance you go today to sign up Prime will no go into effect till April 1st. Standard you have to pay a percentage on everything Prime you do not unless it is out of network. Also make sure to sign up for dental and your spouse has to do that its metlife dental for military. You will have to pay for the 1st month out of pocket but then after that they will take it out of his pay.

If your insurance doesn't cover you from day one -I'm not sure if it does or not or if there's a waiting period like you mentioned- you can try going to the health department for your shots. I've done that before and it's affordable. They only do certain shots but since it's for school, they should have what you need. With Standard, you will not be able to go to the immunization clinic in the base hospital (I tried and get denied a few months ago). You will either have to go to the health department, find a doctor and become a new patient, or go through your school health department (which would probably be the easiest and cheapest). You only have to pay the first $150 every year for Standard too.

Did they change the deductible this year? For just a spouse the deductible used to be $50 not $150. Just curious.

Really? Well that would be a big jump! I got a statement of benefits a few weeks ago after my doctor billed them and it said they had paid $11 for me this year and I had $139 left for the year of my deductible.

You can call Tricare they can answer your question 100% for you. Or you might be able to look on DEERS online. If you are near by a Military Hospital they will usually have the shots you need and do them no problem standard or not. Like I recently had to get a TB test for a job, which they do at the immunization dept. I walked in, signed in, had my test done. No problem. Actually the lady didn't even ask if I was prime or standard. When I asked her she said it didn't matter for the immunization dept.
