My son and his family are relocating to Norfolk Naval Base, Virginia. Having done our research into finding a suitable place to stay - we are saddened that most areas in close proximity to the base are incredibly dangerous and not a safe place to be. Not to mention the school ratings. So, does anyone have any advice as to where we should be looking, how far away from base and how long a commute to work each day? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

My family, along with my sailor, live in the NewPort News and Hampton area. This is west of Norfolk along 64. It is a commute to Norfolk, because you have to to through the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel, which is a pain in the neck during rush hour. Hampton is closer (35 minutes) and Newport News is about a 50 minute drive.

Thank you! I think the drive will be too much for my son...we will steer our search closer to the base.
Funny...we just went through this last Fall! I am a Realtor and as you did not like the area reviews and the school ratings...crazy! My son and his wife were there to purchase so of course my concern was resale. We had a great Realtor, prayed for direction and drove around for a few days to get a feel. To be quite honest...as in many large areas where there are so many people...we found positive and negatives in all cities/communities...and we were everywhere! We are from a small town, almost no crime and our schools are top rated...this was a lot harder for mom! If they have some time to drive around for a couple of days...trust me when I say you will know! Again...as in many areas where there are so many people...no matter where they decide they will need to be vigilant. We have visited several times and feel comfortable. Good luck and God Bless.
Thank you! Your response has been very informative and helpful.
Thank you! I appreciate your help.

Hi Eppidoo - there is a couple (he is retired Navy) in Norfolk who use their home as a Christian outreach to Sailors.  They may know of some housing.  Their names are John and Yvonne Wagnor.  Hope that helps!

I live in the Chesapeake Greenbrier area and love it. This area has good schools and both my children are now graduated.  I have lived here since 1996.  My husband was in the Navy, but is out now.  The Hickory and Great Bridge areas of Chesapeake are good as well. In the Greenbrier area we have plenty of restaurants, the Greenbrier Mall, Target, WalMart, Bed Bath and Beyond, Best Buy, home Depot etc. etc. etc.  we really are in the hub of things.  It takes 20-30 minutes to get to Naval Base but with traffic that could depend.  If you are looking for a safe and family friendly place then the drive is well worth it.  My friends and neighbors are military and they commute just fine and I never hear them complain.  You are welcome to pm me if you want more specific info or even want to call me.

Thank you so much for taking the time to give me a very informative response. My daughter in law was thrilled to get the help in her research. My son is about to graduate from prototype school in Ballston Spa and he has been assigned to USS Maryland which is in dry dock at Norfolk, VA. We will be in touch if we have any further questions for you. Thanks again.

You can email me at lavenjr@gmail.com  My sailor is living in Chesapeake and on the USS Eisenhower which is in dry dock right now.  From our visit last August I think the traffic in the whole area is a nightmare. Bridges, and tunnels and such.   I was glad to hear that when the ship went to dry dock, 'work' was about 5 minutes away for our sailor.  I have also been told that the Chesapeake area is a better/safer area to live in than Norfolk.????

Best wishes to your sailor and family

Jane

Thank you. We have been looking in Chesapeake where it is supposedly a safer environment, but the school ratings are dire, very poor ratings. Hopefully, we will find a suitable home in a nice area where the school is decent.

I don't know where you are finding school ratings but they are not dire.  What schools are you looking at?? If it is South Norfolk schools then yes it may not be the best.  But my children went through the entire system and graduated with honors.  One is in the nuke program and the other is now a 7th grade English teacher.  The teacher received an academic scholarship.  I only post this cause ratings on the computer don't give an accurate picture all the time.  Please let me know what area or schools and I won't stear you wrong!  I will tell you what I know.

Did they check out On base housing?  I know someone who has a really nice 3 bedroom house on base
